South Korea Removes President Park Geun-hye. This also takes S. Korea away from its dictatorial past. One reason analysts have maintained all along that the US has never really been interested in exporting democracy but instead, exporting influence, arms and cooperation with Wash.

The last time a South Korean leader was removed from office under popular pressure was in 1960, when the police fired on crowds calling for President Syngman Rhee to step down. (Mr. Rhee, a dictator, fled into exile in Hawaii and died there.)

In a sign of how far South Korea’s young democracy has evolved, Ms. Park was removed without any violence, after large, peaceful protests in recent months demanding that she step down. In addition to the swell of popular anger, the legislature and the judiciary two institutions that have been weaker than the presidency historically were crucial to the outcome.

“This is a miracle, a new milestone in the strengthening and institutionalizing of democracy in South Korea,” said Kang Won-taek, a political scientist at Seoul National University.

The scandal also swept up the de facto head of Samsung, Lee Jae-yong, who was indicted on charges of bribing Ms. Park and her confidante, Ms. Choi.

Samsung, the nation’s largest conglomerate, has been tainted by corruption before. But the company has been considered too important to the economy for any of its top leaders to spend time behind bars until now. The jailing of Mr. Lee, who is facing trial, is another potent sign that the old order is not holding.

In the wake of the Park scandal, all political parties have vowed to curtail presidential power to pardon chaebol tycoons convicted of white-collar crimes. They also promised to stop chaebol chairmen from helping their children amass fortunes through dubious means, like forcing their companies to do exclusive business with the children’s businesses.

We know the American capitalist doesn't give a fuck but it might be time to sell and short S. Korean stocks if any of them hadn't already.

HERE

The truly amazing thing is that it took so long for this to occur, it would never happen in the US and gives the lie to any future march of western democracy. The future may have democratic in its name (DRK...the Democratic People's Republic of Korea of N. Korea) but they will still be corrupt, crony, state capitalism.

You can bet the other Asian tigers' or any newcomers once called, will not allow their autocrats to be so declawed.

Could anything like this occur in any other Asian country with the only possible exception of Taiwan ?

And yet this Asian country has a Woman President.
Philippines had a Woman President.
Pakistan had a Woman PM who was unfortunately assassinated for being Woman. Muslim country....
And Taiwan has a Woman President.

It's nice to see more Female Leaders in Asian countries!

While in the US, it's interesting there aren't enough women rising up to be Presidents yet, besides Hillary who tried Twice already.

Pity that Korea gotta have a Female President who was corrupted.

Park Geun-hye was brought up under her authoritarian father and probably felt entitled.

Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in 2007 because she was going to clean up the corruption in Pakistan and strengthen their democratic institutions and we all know...you can't have that. That's why the statement above about this impeachment in S. Korea...being a miracle.

If only we would give appropriate life sentences to Cheney and Rumsfeld the US might catch up to S Korea in dealing with government corruption.

At least S Korea had a cover charge. In the US it's pretty much 'lady's night' at the club with free entry for the mega-corps.

Victims of the alt left mental disorder typically believe that dissenting politicians and their supporters are criminals

See for example Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, Castro, etc

100 million slaughtered, and counting

The problem for the useful idiots is that the Stalinist purges (mass slaughter) never stops with political dissidents

A befuddled old man sitting in a decrepit pawn shop would be dragged through the streets then tortured to death for example, as a capitalist pig who took advantage of their poorest among us

So, if I have this right, Cheney and Rumsfeld were merely "dissenting politicians"? They didn't actually do anything, they just "dissented," then? Lying to the US citizens and the world for purpose of invading another country under false pretense is . . . "political dissent." Well yeah, that's a nifty one.

Good to know. So the guy who hacks your bank account or burglarizes your house is just a "dissenting capitalist," I suppose.

Still for a traditional Korean man to bring up a woman to lead a country is quite something. He could have gotten rid of her until he gets a son as successor.

Wow is that ever a simplistic summation of what happened.

Korea is even more mindlessly nationalistic than the US, and they mix it with overt institutional racism too. Having their pro-western leader kicked out in disgrace isn't a cause for celebration at all, and it isn't a victory for anyone. The opposition isn't even going to pretend to embrace cosmopolitanism.

Democracy is what gave us Donald Trump... it's only a positive if you don't have a population full of clueless fucking idiots.

A corrupt autocratic/plutocratic leader being pro western, imagine that and we were supposed to celebrate that ? Besides, pro western these days has taken on a completely different connotation. It could mean pro western (US) hegemony and a partnership in profits and militarism with the rest merely conversation.

As for just what future is in store for S. Korea, I am willing to bet that any move toward reconciliation with the north will be nipped in the bud by Wash. but otherwise a non-subject.

As for democracy giving us Trump...hardly. Democracy historically has been defined as govt. of and by the people in the form of politics by majority or plurality rule. That didn't happen but a bastardization of our democracy (called an electoral college) and our plutocracy...did happen.
