Trump Supreme Court pick Neil Gorsuch faces Senate showdown

President Trump's Supreme Court nominee is expected to advance on Monday towards a full Senate vote, setting the stage for a major political showdown.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is set to approve Neil Gorsuch, but Democrats are planning to use a tactic known as a filibuster to thwart his confirmation.

Republicans may then resort to the so-called "nuclear option", changing the rules to ram through their nominee.

The standoff could leave Congress even more plagued by bitter gridlock.

Republicans control the Senate Judiciary Committee by 11 to 9, so Mr Gorsuch seems assured of passing that hurdle.

The party also controls the chamber by 52 to 48, but they will need 60 votes to secure the nomination if Democrats filibuster, as looks increasingly likely.

Looking good Americashire jackals. The carnival of curiosities continues.

I always thought for a supreme court appointment the 60 was cast in stone. What do they talk about during a filibuster as i have always wondered.

Just like the Dims pioneered the radical scorched-Earth policy to deny a president lame duck SC picks, it was also their idea to go nuclear on a whim

Gorsuch is already confirmed. Fuck Schumer's chickens

Harry Reid's chickens

Is comin' home

To roost

From my memory it used to be 66 then 60 then 50. But still 60 for a SCROTUM scrotus

Actually who changed those rules and when? Actually this makes fuk all sense - after they change it to 50..does it go back up to 60

It's true.

In fairness, Gingrich set up the all or nothing atmosphere, and McConnell played the just don't have hearings game that pissed everybody off. Then there's the ridiculous notion that a justice should be replaced by a politically similar one, rather than an apolitical one as much as possible.

Thing is, a day will come when McConnell's chickens come home to roost too.

Not really

The left has already advertised the sort of mindset that there are no laws or rules that apply to them. They would have gone nuclear on SC nominations regardless

This is just the Republicans recognizing that and getting the jump on them

Well, they will ensure that now.

Perhaps, IF the Dems force the issue. It's their choice, they are the ones causing the collapse of the rules either way. THEY went nuclear first. THEY announced that a lame duck Republican would never get a SC pick. Now they scream bloody murder that the Republicans have wised up

They certainly aren't blameless. On the other hand, McConnell forcing a huge backlog of unfilled judiciary seats by refusing to hold votes set up this round of rule changing. In the end, only because of demographics, the GOP will come to regret it.

But in the meantime, they'll run helter skelter ahead, and motivate a lot of democrats and progressives for 2018 and 2020.

It's a phase in the country's history, like the fantasy of permanent one party rule Daley tried in the Bush years.

Bam. 2006 and 2008.
