Web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee slams UK and US net plans

The web's creator has attacked any UK plans to weaken encryption and promised to battle any moves by the Trump administration to weaken net neutrality.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee was speaking to the BBC following the news that he has been given the Turing Award.

It is sometimes known as the Nobel Prize of computing.

Sir Tim said moves to undermine encryption would be a "bad idea" and represent a massive security breach.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd has said there should be no safe space for terrorists to be able to communicate online. But Sir Tim said giving the authorities a key to unlock coded messages would have serious consequences.

"Now I know that if you're trying to catch terrorists it's really tempting to demand to be able to break all that encryption but if you break that encryption then guess what - so could other people and guess what - they may end up getting better at it than you are," he said.

Sir Tim also criticised moves by legislators on both sides of the Atlantic, which he sees as an assault on the privacy of web users. He attacked the UK's recent Investigatory Powers Act, which he had criticised when it went through Parliament: "The idea that all ISPs should be required to spy on citizens and hold the data for six months is appalling."

In the United States he is concerned that the principle of net neutrality, which treats all internet traffic equally, could be watered down by the Trump administration and the Federal Communications Commission.

"If the FCC does move to reduce net neutrality I will fight it as hard as I can," he vowed.

The web's creator also said he was shocked by the direction the US Congress and Senate had taken when they voted to scrap laws preventing internet service providers from selling users' data.
He said privacy online was as important as the trust between a doctor and a patient.

"We're talking about it being just a human right that my ability to communicate with people on the web, to go to websites I want without being spied on is really, really crucial."

Like I've written here and we in the west get closer everyday...China is THE role model and on just about every level.

China is fast becoming not just [a] but THE ideal capitalist fascist regime on the planet and while the west is playing the long game, that game is progressing very nicely. These issues are just a chance to put a little more wood on the fire.

The elimination of net neutrality begins of course...as a profit center. That's all it is to begin with. But then users will be offered to pay more...for more speed and security...a re-encryption. Thus, net encryption itself will become a profit center.

One must always realize that contrary to bogus Nobel prizes, the capitalist and capitalism has no problem whatsoever, jumping right in bed...with fascism.

America is just about there and the UK not too far behind :(

and when they can read minds?

I had never really figured it out but now come to realize what all of the talk of tinfoil hats meant.

I wonder if there is yet another profit center. Tin foil hats to keep big brother from...reading your mind. I mean it's a given that 'god' can read your mind and think the wrong things, you will...pay a price. But tin foil hats can't keep god out, so.....?

I think I'll talk to some investors real soon on this one. I've got it...a Faraday hat...that's the ticket. I mean we already have the Faraday car and the Faraday experience, so.....? Could be a winner, locking the govt....out of your head. Who'd a thought that fascism could be so exciting ?

Youse people understand nothing.

For example, when I call my dealer I say "Got time to stop over ?". If I want to buy a gun, pretty much the same but maybe "Well let me have a look at it".

I actually did design a voice scrambler for cordless phones but the implementation of it was too much PITA.

Bottom line is that you have no privacy. They bitch about Russia releasing our emails, while all the time they are monitoring all of Russia's emails. It is not what is done it is who is doing it. When the US does it, it is OK. When anyone else does the same exact thing it is not OK. And they have all of YOUR emails. Why the fuck should the Hillary emails be such a secret when she was operating for our government ? I think all of their emails should be made public.

There are very few things that need to be secret. I never put much into the Clinton email scandal, but then why hide it ? That leads people to believe there is wrongdoing, as far as accusing her of white slavery. I wouldn't put it past her, but they got nothing in the way of proof. There was something going on with all this talk of pizza, but we are not likely to find out exactly what it is.

Unless people talk, we do not know. A guy told me a long time ago, as others, if you keep your mouth shut you are not likely to get busted. Over the years I found out he was right.

Of late though, I no longer care about anything. Throw me in jail, in fact execute me. Please.
