So I guess that technically, it is okay to run against Assad, but you are not allowed to win, you are not allowed to hold any political positions that are different from his, and you are not allowed to oppose him politically.

Where did I say anyone was 'welcomed as a liberator'?? This started when Assad chose to suppress peaceful demonstrations and gas his enemies, creating a cycle of violence that led to opportunists like ISIL exploiting the conflict for their own gains.
