Recently myself and several others were helplessly within sight and immediately on scene of a suicide outside a local restaurant. This act was public, abrupt, horrifically brutal, senseless and final.
I've witnessed death of family, friends and acquaintances both violent and serene. Sometimes with unchecked emotion others with detached empathy.
This deeply tragic act committed by an emotionally distraught, confused young man will stay with me for life. I can't imagine his despair the moments prior to pulling a trigger. Left behind were a traumatized young woman bloodied, hysterical and a handful of strangers offering what response we could. Eventually I know I will come to terms with what we witnessed. With therapy it's my hope the young lady and the families effected will be able to heal and have a happy, productive future. Though the experience changed us, life will continue without that young man as it has always done. The life of that young woman and those of the families will be changed forever. It was just so needless and such a desperate final solution.

How very tragic. I'm sorry for all of you that were there, and I hope that this chap has finally found his peace.

Had a similar thing happen while I was on duty in a hospital many many many years ago. I was in my late teens/early 20's, was doing charge and passing out meds. Hear a thump, and basically thought" ha ha, someone has fallen out of bed" upstairs. A family member came out and said someone has fallen past the window - I ran into the room and yep, someone on the concrete outside, facedown. Climbed out the window, picked his face up out of the blood so he could breath and yelled for someone to call the ER.

He basically died in my hands.

I can describe many things about that scene, including all the people who stood at the windows and gawked at the dying man.

The shame was that someone else did the same thing a few months later before the hospital put limiting hinges on the windows so they couldn't be opened more than a few inches.

Still think that if someone wants to dies, there should be steps that can be taken to help them do it. No-one should have to die like that.
