aylee, to your question---its typical to reckon things "men, women, children" as opposed to "male, female" into which children would be separated.

that said---unless "homelessness" is defined very liberally, im finding the "1 in every 30" number for children very difficult to accept from a pure numbers perspective---but even then.

It depends on who does the counting and actually, "Homelessness" as defined by the govt can vary depending on the department..
"There is more than one “official” definition of homelessness. Health centers funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) use the following:
A homeless individual is defined in section 330(h)(5)(A) as “an individual who lacks housing (without regard to whether the individual is a member of a family), including an individual whose primary residence during the night is a supervised public or private facility (e.g., shelters) that provides temporary living accommodations, and an individual who is a resident in transitional housing.” A homeless person is an individual without permanent housing who may live on the streets; stay in a shelter, mission, single room occupancy facilities, abandoned building or vehicle; or in any other unstable or non-permanent situation. [Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S.C., 254b)]

An individual may be considered to be homeless if that person is “doubled up,” a term that refers to a situation where individuals are unable to maintain their housing situation and are forced to stay with a series of friends and/or extended family members. In addition, previously homeless individuals who are to be released from a prison or a hospital may be considered homeless if they do not have a stable housing situation to which they can return. A recognition of the instability of an individual’s living arrangements is critical to the definition of homelessness. (HRSA/Bureau of Primary Health Care, Program Assistance Letter 99-12, Health Care for the Homeless Principles of Practice)"

https://www.nhchc.org/faq/official-definition-homelessness/

The govt might consider someone couch surfing at family or friend's places as being homeless whereas some people might not think that qualifies as being homeless.. the govt considers people living at extended stay hotels as homeless but if they dont have the credit or job stability to sign a lease then they dont have much choice, other than finding a bridge to sleep under or sleeping in the car.. So if something isnt considered a "permanent home", then living there you might be considered homeless by those govt standards.. And really, few people or children want to let anyone know they are homeless and be treated differently (like they have the plague) as a result.. and how does the govt know who is couch surfing? they dont know so getting actual accurate numbers can be difficult..

And, what is the definition of a "homeless child and youth"? there are lots of kids that are in foster care and age out, so once they turn 18 they are kicked out and on their own, but according to this, they are considered a "youth" until they are 21..

"The Runaway and Homeless Youth Act (RHYA) defines homeless youth as individuals who are “not more than 21 years of age"
http://youth.gov/youth-topics/runaway-and-homeless-youth/federal-definitions

Some people might consider an aged-out foster kid at 18 to be an adult so you view the stats differently than various govt agencies do.. and included as "homeless children and youth" would be all the kids that run away from home... now how many kids run away each year? apparently anywhere from 1.6 million to as many as 2.8 million..

"In 2002, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention estimated that 1.6 million youth run away in a year in the United States. The Research Triangle Institute studied runaway youth in 1995 and estimated that 2.8 million youth in the United States had a runaway experience during the previous year."

When you leave women out of consideration, it's misogyny.

When you leave men out of consideration, it's feminism.

So what is it when you leave homeless children out of consideration??? Its not like that is a small problem..

"A staggering 2.5 million children are now homeless each year in America. This historic high represents one in every 30 children in the United States."

Is there some reason you do not believe that children were counted in the men/women numbers? The last I checked, children could still be sexed male or female.

because a child is not a woman or a man cuz they arent an adult yet.. who calls a little girl a "woman" or a little boy a "man"???? Who ever came up with the sign in the pic obviously excluded homeless children and youth entirely.. I guess to some, homeless kids dont exist.. [8|]

I appreciate your finding that...at the very least, one can see the difficulty not only in defining and in agreeing on the term, but even after that, the counting and estimating.

unfortunately, for me, what it means is taking any numbers about homelessness, especially "staggering ones", with a higher than usual amount of skepticism.

mnottertail -> RE: Homelessness (4/15/2017 3:53:49 PM)

There is a large uncounted segment of homeless of course. Hard to get solid numbers, and since our prison population exceeds that of Russia and China combined, and with the race away from institutionalization, there are many that otherwise would be homeless ticks counted as 'homeful'

what is the population of the US? about 325 million by now? the numbers can seem staggering cuz there are so many people living in this country.. so the homeless numbers are gonna seem staggering..

in Houston, I have seen homeless people sleeping in the middle of the sidewalk downtown, sleeping on the transit train, lined up all the way around the block in the middle of the day at a homeless shelter, see them with cardboard signs on street corners, see them at the library, etc.... but if you dont see them you wouldnt know there were any homeless people at all.. the ones that have jobs dont want their boss or co-workers to know they are homeless so are careful to not look like they are...

Oh, sorry. I might have been led astray by your present and previous innumerable and relentless efforts to proclaim that the US is the biggest cock-up in all of history.

Everybody reading your post could easily discern that you clearly meant to include the Sudan and Chile and Indonesia and Italy and yes, fucking homeless kids in CANADA too.

Starving kids are a problem, modern slavery is a problem, etc., all of which exist even outside the US, to much further extent.

What are YOU doing about it other than incessantly and ceaselessly griping and bitching and more bitching at the country who is hosting your stupid dullwit ass and for some reason hasn't kicked you ingrate fat butt out 10 years ago?

Fuckwit

Is this a comment against the guy who drags his kids around the grocery store parking lots or me who has an issue with it?

There are plentiful means to avail oneself of aid for the kids without resorting to parading the children around the car parks all day to his own ends. Otherwise the car parks would be flooded with that spectacle. I have taken various people to the local Department of Family Services, the VA, etc. and taken them through the process when needed, so I know wherefrom I speak.

So yes, I have a BIG issue with that ignominious form of child abuse.

Amerika and many amerikans like to pimp amerika as the best of the best....the best that ever there was. When someone points out that this is not true some cop an attitude and point out "what about x,y and z.
The point is, that the comparison is not between x,y and z and amerika but between the image and the reality of amerika.

that's to my point a bit---the latter people you describe are what I would call "homeless." definitions that fall short of that start to stretch the depth and despair of the word.

the numbers seem "staggering" because im having a difficult time believing in their veracity--at least in reference to a more meaningful definition of "homeless." and again---even then to an extent.

yes I know this is a large city phenomena but, I live in a rural area where the population of the immediately nearby city and accompanying towns and villages is probably ~40 thousand people. there is no one living on the street, or under bridges or in cars or so far as I can tell, in the woods. there are two shelters, one for women and one for men, and they are relatively small---they are houses where the people in need get bedrooms as opposed to large open floors with cots and only a small handful of people, and less with children, are in them at any given time.

for some people who are motivated/inclined to care about children in general, or the problem of homelessness as it involves children in particular, or maybe even the casual listener, I suspect its its far too easy to believe in the large numbers and not give them the scrutiny and incredulity they might deserve.

it might come down to for me---I wouldn't consider a parent and child who are in transition and who make use of a shelter, friends or especially family temporarily (my premise being most people with kids would still have parents or siblings where a "home" is available), as "homeless" as compared to others who are that on a more permanent basis.

I suspect it (defining the breadth of the problem) starts to really become an issue when government starts to get involved, bureaucracies are created and public monies are allocated to deal with it.

Learn to read, learn to comprehend, brother.

You are welcome to cite where I ever proclaimed or even hinted that the US was the best thing going, now or ever. Or ever presenting anything resembling a 'love it or leave it' attitude.

Or are you trying to say that the US is the only concern that has ever done nasty things? There is lots to not be proud of in that venture, as there has been in and still are in many other 'civilizations,' for those who've delved into any history or current news outside the US at all.

All tj44 and you do is bitch bitch bitch about the US, whereas I try to give people here encouragement to do better by way of pointing out some countries who do some things better, and what few things the US does better, which such endeavor as constant whiners like you and tj are too stupid and lazy to make any effort towards. Not that you or tj could recall or render those countries whom I've made mention of so often, because you don't read well.
