Know why the Swiss have never been invaded ? Their neutrality, guns, and geography. Being located in high mountains tough land and tunnels they'd blow when the invaders go inside. Not to mention all of those numbered bank accounts but...mention them anyway.
They took care of Nazi money and now communist kleptocrats money and even Vatican (Catholic) money. They'll train and educate the Muslims, (Iranians) Chinese and even the N. Korean communist hierarchy. They'll even teach you to speak German/Swiss.
...and hardly any coffee.
Switzerland was invaded in 1798, by French revolutionary forces, and became a centralistic (later federalistic) satellite state of France. In the Vienna congress 1815 (after Napoleon was defeated), the Swiss confederation was installed, and their neutrality enforced.
Well the Swiss have learned a lot since 'back in the day' hey ! Many there still speak French as their first language. Then it's German/Swiss. Gee...I wonder why ?
However before 1798 it was the modern region of Vaud belonged to the Canton of Bern and one could argue...not Switzerland.
Then there is this too:
The majority of Francophone Catholic Vaudese felt oppressed by the German-speaking Protestant majority of Bern. Several Vaudese patriots such as Frédéric-César de La Harpe advocated for independence. In 1795, La Harpe called on his compatriots to rise up against the Bernese aristocrats, but his appeal fell to deaf ears, and he had to flee to Revolutionary France, where he resumed his activism.
In late 1797, French general Napoleon Bonaparte, who had just successfully conquered northern Italy and founded the Cisalpine Republic, pressed the French Directory to occupy Switzerland and soon 10,000 troops gathered near the city of Genève. Valtellina, Chiavenna and Bormio, dependencies of the 'Three Leagues' revolted and with French support seceded from the Confederacy to join the Cisalpine Republic on 10 October 1797.
All of which precipitated France using the dissatisfaction of the rural elites in the dependencies and the 'Enlightened' citizenry in the cantons to stimulate revolutionary excitement.
The first event of what would become known as the "Helvetic Revolution" happened with a patriot uprising in Liestal in the Canton of Basel on 17 January. The rebels demanded legal equality, erected a liberty tree and burned down three Vogtei castles by 23 January. On 24 January 1798, the urban elite of Vaud proclaimed the Lemanic Republic (French: République lémanique) in Lausanne, which became its seat of government.
So one could say that the French 'occupied' the land now called Switzerland and who simply aided the Helvetic Revolution.
