ORIGINAL: Nnanji I have felt real tears coming down my face listening to a great performance of Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2 or Debussy's La Mer, that's what a tough guy I am. The first time I heard Rachmaninov, I cried as well. Then again, the first time I went to a museum, I cried at the sight of a beautifully carved statue. I read an article about goosebumps and tears at the sight of beauty or emotional music . Now I have to go find it again. So what is it about those Russians and their culture? They might screw up everything else, but when it comes to the arts, they are just astounding. And it seems to be part and parcel of the venture that they are going to make sure everybody knows about it! I remember hearing Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kijé suite when I was 3 years old on the car radio (I know I was 3 because of other surrounding details), and it was as though I were physically grabbed and taken to another place that doesn't exist in our own world then or now or ever. In my past career, I've had the experience (the wonder, actually) of watching the Moscow Ballet, hearing the St. Petersburg Orchestra, seeing the Russian Folk Ballet, etc. I worked most of the best shows on the planet back in the day (the NY Philharmonic, The Rolling Stones, The Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Guarneri String Quartet, the big musicals, etc.), and I am enthralled by various German/Austrian and French and other composers too, but when on a live stage, the Russians just floored me like no one else.
