High heels row: Petition for work dress code law rejected

Calls to introduce a new law banning companies from telling women to wear high heels at work have been rejected by the government.

The Equalities Office said existing legislation was "adequate" but it would issue guidelines to firms this summer.

The issue was debated in Parliament in March after Nicola Thorp, who was sent home for wearing flat shoes, set up a petition with more 152,000 signatures.

Miss Thorp said the decision to stop short of a law change was a "cop-out".

She began her petition after being told to leave a temp job for refusing to wear a "2-4in heel".

If she wasn't working on a temp contract, maybe she could have the male employees turn up in nosebleed heels to show solidarity?

My ex worked for a bus company that would not allow their male employees to wear shorts in the summer. They argued that this was unfair as women were allowed to wear skirts to stay cooler. Rather than allow men to wear shorts they banned the women from wearing skirts. If men insist that women should wear footwear that is bad for their posture, and feet, they should lead by example. After all, I'm all for men being able to wear skirts to work to stay cool in the summer.

I love high heels but Christ they must wreck women's feet and skeletal malarkey...dont some of us lot wear "skirts sometime" Dont knock it till you have tried it Englishmen jackals - they are actually comfy - and rest of the world we go commando - buck naked underneath...actually those shoes were really comfy not that I remember what they are called. Ah the sporran - where we keep our booze money

Nice photos, good legs on a man always have to be admired. I must say though that I don't actually use this name anywhere else. I'm only on one other site, and that account wouldn't be found even if I gave you the name for it

Yup, no high heels.

It hurts my feet. I can't even survive 5 mins on it!

And I actually have alot of dominant men give me shit about it! Saying all other women can wear high heels, why can't I?

And from my female friends. Beautiful legs are worth the pain. Not for me!

I have not found a pair of high heels that doesn't hurt. So when somebody finds me one that doesn't hurt. I will wear it. I have low pain tolerance!

In the past, Chinese females would squeeze their feet into excessively small shoes, and grit the pain because in the past, tiny feet was an attractive thing I think.

But I mean this sucks! Why do poor females gotta suffer pain for beauty?

I actually love heels, and even with my dodgy ankles and knees I will still wear them, but if an employer, especially a male employer told me I had to wear them all day for the job, then I'd be telling them to lead by example after I'd given them a full written medical reason as to why it's so bad for us.

Wearing heels doesn't make me any more qualified for a job, and it certainly doesn't make some other woman better than me just because she's willing to cripple herself wearing them either. Am I likely to be found wearing heels with a dress? Hell yes, but then it's also rear I'm found wearing a dress. I also wear heels with trousers too though. In fact, wearing heels like I do is the reason I like tall men. I can't bare towering over guys when I have heels on. It's so much nicer to be with a 6'+ man when you have 3-4" heels on

My podiatrist told me that no women over 30 should wear heels. They cause all kind of foot and toe problems.

I remember one office that required female employees to wear high heels. Both male and female employees showed up in Western riding boots and did line dancing on the morning break. The requirement went away and was replaced with "heels recommended for meetings with clients". Being a field engineer and wearing safety shoes mostly; I didn't have a dog in the hunt but the line dancing was a fun break from routine.
