Got you. I was forgetting the Indonesians, so thanks for catching that.
I'm a bit dubious about equating male circumcision with infibulation though. Losing sensitivity in the glans doesn't really compare with having the clitoris (and as often as not the inner labia) amputated, does it? Guys who've been cut can still come.

I'm not equating them most female genital mutilation are horrific acts and crimes against humanity, while circumcision or type Ia FGM is an invasive procedure but not mayem... still I would be pretty pissed off if my parents took away part of my sexual pleasure becuase a jewish breakfast products manufacturer said to prevent masturbatory habits that way and then somehow became a tradiction.
I just wanted to point out I'm not against muslims for the sake of it I'm against repressive acts in general and the habit of religious people to restrict sexual pleasure, and that seen from someone who lives in a culture that doesn't practise circumsision it looks at best very wierd and once known the reasons creepy.

I think that as male circumcision was also practised by the ancient Egyptians and assyrians among others, the point was most likely to prevent sand under the foreskin than anything else: most of the dietary restrictions in leviticus make sense if you're living in a desert during the bronze age, after all.

I don't want to hijack the thread so I will just tell, as italian, that installing a bibet in the bathroom is a better solution to the problem. [;)]

back to the main topic, was the claim of FGM being an african problem derivated from Rezla Aslan interview on CNN? Because he was very misleading.

It's from talking to people who work for the anti-infibulation groups or know people who do and reading the papers, mostly: whenever they catch somebody doing that here they seem to be an African from one of the former French colonies on the coast rather than an Asian. I take it's that not the case in Italy?

Honestly I do not know I checked the statistical archive for crimes but I guess it's included in the mayem's statistic there is no separated data even if there is a special law that tackles specifically this crime (also if committed abroad by residents in Italy), but even if there were statistics I guess they would be misleading as there is virtually no immigration here from middle eastern countries so I guess africans or people from pakistan and bangladesh, maybe australian that have different immigrant composition would see it differently.
I guess the results on this kind of consideration are affected by the process enforcing a certain law has, I mean I guess to catch them somone has to report or tip what's happening, so it might be you just listen about those comunities where someone in the family informs authorities. I have a suspect it might be like sexual violence if you see official statistics it's almost not existent in saudi arabia or united emirates but when you know they incarcerate whoever denunces a rape for adultery and the only legally valid proof is to have five arab male witnesses you might guess the problem is simply not reported by the victims. I persoanlly think the same happens with female genital mutilations due to it's sexual nature, in africa you have movements that are raising the problem and fighting it, I read an article where they said in Egypt the situation is rapidly changing due to education efforts.
