dsalphabunny -> work from home? (7/26/2006 11:06:51 AM)

i am curious has anyone out there found a real work from home sort of job that involves you working for other people, maybe as a general contractor?  not one of those 'stuff enevlope' scams?  i have found one type and was wondering if there were any others.  the rising cost of just about everything including childcare makes working outside the home kinda hard sometimes, especially when considering a 'second' job.

anyone?

Many people I know work from home. Most are either artists or self employed in a trade. I have not found too many jobs working for other people ( subcontracting) that make much money that one can do without leaving home. It would be lovely to not have to drive 100 miles a day though.

my friend is a travel agent for a large travel company. She works from home. The company supplies phone lines, computer, software and so on. She gets to stay in her nice fuzzy PJs in winter all day !. I'm jealous. lol

Depending on the line of work you do, you could be a virtual assisstant. One of my girls hires VAs for her company. Gotta be able to do multipul tasks and self motivated though.

Working from home would SUCK for me. Home is where I go to get away from all that Bull Shit. After working, where would I go to relax?

However, if you are in a bind to work from home, you could try working for a phone/other company where you do customer service, sales, collections etc...  Most who work for the
1-900 lines usually work from home or on there cell phone.

Best of luck.

I ran an online store (not an ebay one either) and I sold antiques and collectibles. I rather enjoyed it, but it was very time consuming and I quit doing it when  I finished my degree because I just ran out of space and time.

I'd love to do the Travel Agent thing, in fact, that's my long-range plan!  Right now I'm a medical transcriptionist working from home full time.  You really have to be disciplined to do this kind of work, though, and sometimes I'm not.  But the bills depend on it!

I was lucky that I learned it while working in a medical clinic and am really just self taught.  Still learning everyday.  Other than that, there are courses you can take, even online ones, but you have to be careful to get one of the few good schools out there.

The upside is that you can make as much money as you want to, as long as there is work in your typing pool!

Good luck!

My long-term goal is to get into a situation where I can spend my time doing biological/ecological work, but while I'm stuck in this city those aren't happening.  I'm actually going out with pup today to buy a few things in order to begin persuing my artistic talents.  The plan is to get a part-time job, take Spanish classes, and sell my artwork online.  I'm going to try working with chalk and paints.

That reminds me, you could always work as a phone sex operator.

Actually there are quite a few Admin Assistant companies where the admin girls work from home for several small companies. Doing up letters, quotes, A/P A/R payroll etc. with highspeed iternet and courier services everything really can be done from home *S*

More and more companies are hiring independent contractors who work out of their homes, as employers save on benefits they would have to pay employees.

The medical field commonly uses outside sources for medical billing, medical transcription, collections, accounting, phone calling, etc.

I work mostly out of my home doing legal work, making it easier for me go to  grad school.  Freelance writing is another solid option, and I have known many who have achieved three figures a year success with e-bay.

Zumala, Well you could do some work from home for a small environmental consulting firm maybe, Environmental Impact Studies and such. I work from home and I'm in that field but work groundwater rather than bugs and bunnies.

Dsalphabunny, it really depends on your skill areas and levels, many computer jobs are workable from home, as are many jobs where writting skills are the reall qualification.
Grant Writer, Report writers, proofreaders, etc.

Hiya

How about freight forwarding? All you need is a desk, PC, phone, fax and printer and you're away. I started my freight business from home three years ago - now its a multinational.

Dont go for a franchise though - ask me if you would like any info. The guys offering franchises will take your money and give you a territory - which is bullshit from the start ('scuse my language) - but their "network" doesnt really exist.

I'm an artist and work from home. I have a studio appartment and live above my studio which was a small industrial workshop when it was orginally built about 100 years ago. I'm now busy working on  a commision making 50 etchings. God is in his heaven and all is right with the world from my point of view.

I wouldn't live and work anywhere else. I have a bar to the left of me and a baker's to the right and a cafe across the road and next to that is a sex shop, along the road a fetish fashion shop, then a coffee shop, brothel (which I have yet to use). I don't really need to go out of the street, I can satisfy all my vices withing 5 min walk from my work.

~ fast reply ~

I work at home some days, but most days find me in the office.  The job I just applied for will allow me to work from home 1-2 days a week and how wonderful that will be.  Years ago I was part of a start up (from the very beginning of the company) and before we actually had an office lease we all worked out of our homes.  It had its plusses and minuses.  It was very convenient to get up, get coffee, and mosey across the hallway to my home office, sit down in my robe (um yeah, my robe) and start working.  The problem is, I was always at work!  I found myself working all the time.  I lived at my job, as opposed to working at my home. It took discipline to not work.  If I would go into the office to pay bills or do anything personal, I would inadvertantly end up working.  I had to set parameters for myself - as in no working before 7am or after 7pm.

I do that now, to some degree.  With my laptop, I have access to work all the time.  Work email is always up (through VPN)  and I always answer it.  I will work from home as often as I can now.  Too many other things in life keep me from going overboard again.

BeingChewsie -> RE: work from home? (7/27/2006 8:00:10 AM)

I work outside the house 2 days a week(in my field) and I work from home 4/5 days a week. I run his e-bay business, you have to be dedicated to it though. That is a full-time job in itself for me. I manage his nursing agency too. You could try a job as a nurse recruiter for a travel nursing agency..they work from home usually. I love e-bay and think it is a great option for people who want to stay at home. Consulting is another option. Reservation agent for Jet blue..I know they work from home.

Another option if you have a Master's Degree( or are matriculated into a Master's Program) or higher is to teach online. It is great option..you can do it in your pj's :). My owner loves it.
