Turkish authorities block Wikipedia without giving reason

Turkey has blocked all access inside the country to the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia.
Officials said "an administrative measure" had been taken, but gave no reason why.

Turkish media said authorities had asked Wikipedia to remove content by writers "supporting terror".

Turkey has temporarily blocked social media sites including Facebook and Twitter in the past, usually following protests or terror attacks.

The Turkey Blocks monitoring group said Wikipedia was unreachable from 08:00 (05:00 GMT). People in Istanbul were unable to access any pages without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Critics say it smacks of Turkey's repression of free speech: over half of all requests to Twitter to remove content have come from Turkey, and the country now ranks 155 of 180 in the press freedom index of the watchdog Reporters without Borders.

Mr Erdogan narrowly won a controversial 16 April referendum on increasing his powers, but the issue has deeply divided the country.

Turkey referendum: Erdogan hails 'clear' win in vote on new powers

He was speaking in Istanbul as the count neared completion. With more than 99% of ballots counted, "Yes" was on 51.36% and "No" on 48.64%.
Erdogan supporters say replacing the parliamentary system with an executive presidency will modernise the country.
The two main opposition parties are challenging the results.

As jubilant Erdogan supporters rallied in the big cities, pots and pans were banged in Istanbul by opponents of the referendum, in a traditional form of protest.

If confirmed, the "Yes" vote could also see Mr Erdogan remain in office until 2029.
Three people were shot dead near a polling station in the south-eastern province of Diyarbakir, reportedly during a dispute over how they were voting.

I was wondering why you posted this. I should have known. But I agree that it's foolish to nurture good relations with the host country of a critical U.S. base. And goodness knows, a phone call is a major concession. At this rate, Trump will be offering him the White House next.

If calling me an idiot made your day a little better, I'm happy for you. Maybe you'll be able to sleep now. Try to get some rest.

Well duh.

Erdogan is an unrepentant Islamist whose focus is on taking Turkey back down the road to Islamic rule.

Predictably the Guardian is cheering him on as "good for democracy".

The Guardian, is of course, a bunch of socialist fucking nutcases.
