I know this goes on everywhere but not to the extent as it does in America, Russia – and countries of similar wreckage.

Cronyism is the practice of partiality in awarding jobs and other advantages to friends or trusted colleagues, especially in politics and between politicians and supportive organizations.[1] For instance, this includes appointing "cronies" to positions of authority, regardless of their qualifications.[2]

Cronyism exists when the appointer and the beneficiary such as an appointee are in social or business contact. Often, the appointer needs support in his or her own proposal, job or position of authority, and for this reason the appointer appoints individuals who will not try to weaken his or her proposals, vote against issues, or express views contrary to those of the appointer. Politically, "cronyism" is derogatorily used to imply buying and selling favors, such as: votes in legislative bodies, as doing favors to organizations, giving desirable ambassadorships to exotic places, etc.

Yes, and this sort of trend is why neither society nor your government work even half as well as they should.
Depressing, innit?
(I'd say that the current crop of government appointees goes beyond mere cronyism as the orange tagnut stinking up the white house seems to have spent the bulk of last year's election campaigning taking a deliberately anti-meritocratic line...)

Abso-fucking-lutely. Although in recent years they have tried to be more subtle about it so people don't recognize it right away. They no longer appoint their brother with the same name, now they appoint the cousin with a different last name (who's just like a brother to them) -- or better yet-- a friend of their brother. That way there is no *direct* connection between them, and when some reporter discovers and exposes the connection-- and real reason for the appointment, they can swear its not nepotism, but a mere coincidence.

And then you have Trump, who is so blatantly egotistical and doesn't even try to be subtle by appointing his own children and their spouses....

But the real question that you have to ask is if it really is a bad thing?

In some cases yeah - appointing your half retarded no experience family friend 'Yes Man' is bad. But in other cases, appointing some one that is mostly qualified that you trust, that can read your mannerisms and meanings and translate them effectively into what you're asking into what needs to be done is a much better choice then the most qualified individual that is socially inept and politically opposed to you...

Status: offline 		Crony capitalism is what Putin has created the associates of and with which, he surrounded himself. They are HIS cronies and now there are more billionaires in Moscow than any other city.

American 'cronyism' finds it success in plutocracy so businessmen and their groups purchase their influence and benefits from their hirelings in congress and somewhat through the executive.
