Theresa May defends plans to cap 'rip off' energy bills Theresa May has denied that her plans for a cap on "rip off" energy prices are a repeat of an old Labour policy derided by David Cameron as "Marxist". The prime minister said 17m households would benefit by up to £100 from the cap on poor value standard variable tariffs. Industry figures have criticised the plan, first announced last month, saying it could lead to higher prices. Labour said there was no guarantee the cap would stop energy prices going up. And the SNP described the proposal as an "election bribe" - while former Lib Dem energy secretary Sir Ed Davey said voters would be "astonished" the Conservatives were "copying" a policy proposed by former Labour leader Ed Miliband at the 2015 election. The Tories have pocketed millions in donations from energy fat cats. The revelation comes hours after Consevatives slammed Ed Miliband’s plan to stop suppliers ripping off customers. Analysis of donations from individuals and firms in the energy, oil and gas sector show David Cameron’s party have received £2.6million since the general election. And donors linked to energy firms have given £3.4million since Cameron became leader in 2005. Yesterday Ed Miliband said Labour would press ahead with new laws forcing energy firms to slash bills within months of taking office after May’s election. The Tories blasted the pledge as “disastrous”. The donors’ international funds are estimated to have energy industry investments topping £15billion.
