Reminds me of a quote: There is addition and subtraction, the rest is conversation.

However, there are points in many lives when we are forced to do otherwise. Reminding me of another quote, to paraphrase: It is not in the human condition to compete for limited resources to survive and also with each for the means...to pay for them. (in so many words)

I will take exception to that in this way. Man (human) kind was in fact just that way for many 10's of 1000's of years and in fact failing to successfully compete, usually found himself killed to be eaten. Prompting man's first progressive improvement being his first successful social experiment in...slavery over cannibalism.

The only difference today and for only about 3 millennia, is that man, has walked out of cave or hut and has progressively...invented better tools.
