India has cancelled plans to build nearly 14 gigawatts of coal-fired power stations – about the same as the total amount in the UK – with the price for solar electricity “free falling” to levels once considered impossible.

Analyst Tim Buckley said the shift away from the dirtiest fossil fuel and towards solar in India would have “profound” implications on global energy markets.

According to his article on the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis’s website, 13.7GW of planned coal power projects have been cancelled so far this month – in a stark indication of the pace of change.

“For the first time solar is cheaper than coal in India and the implications this has for transforming global energy markets is profound,” Mr Buckley said.

“Measures taken by the Indian Government to improve energy efficiency coupled with ambitious renewable energy targets and the plummeting cost of solar has had an impact on existing as well as proposed coal fired power plants, rendering an increasing number as financially unviable.

He said about it has been accepted that some £6.9bn-worth of existing coal power plants at Mundra in Gujarat were “no longer viable because of the prohibitively high cost of imported coal relative to the long-term electricity supply contracts”.

This, Mr Buckley added, was a further indication of the “rise of stranded assets across the Indian power generation sector”.

Investors from all over the world were showing an interest in India’s burgeoning solar sector.

“The caliber of the global financial institutions who are bidding into India’s solar power infrastructure tenders is a strong endorsement of India’s leadership in this energy transformation and will have significant ripple effects into other transforming markets, as is already seen in the UAE, South Africa, Australia, Chile and Mexico,” Mr Buckley said.

Good to have a bit of a break from Trump, men's rights, Trump, how evil Muslims are, Trump, guns and Trump on this forum.

Let's hope solar and wind can transform our energy futures. It will cause some economic dislocation but will also make many countries self-sufficient and therefore more secure.

I wish we could get over the objections some people in the UK have to wind power - rather windmills on the top of hills than poisoning our children with exhuast fumes in inner cities.

Optimistic, I know, but we've just had 22 people killed and over 100 casualties in Manchester, we could do with smiling at something.

I was wondering when this was going to happen.

The biggest reason why Solar Power won't take off for places like the US is because we have already have a strong foundation and infrastructure which allows for Oil/Coal to be very cost effect - and the buy in to convert our existing infrastructure to something like Solar energy would be too prohibitive. However, countries which are just now pushing into the industrial stages where the consumption of power spikes, the cost to install it is much more competitive, allowing them to build a foundation using alternative energy sources as the base.

Interesting that it is India that takes the first step into that though...

I read this somewhere California hit 67% from renewables

Renewable energy sources provided 67 per cent of all electricity used by the California Independent System Operator on Saturday 13 May, a new state record.

Thanks to a prolonged period of sunshine and strong winds in addition to heavy rainfall filling the state’s reservoirs at hydroelectric plants, California reached a new renewable energy milestone last weekend.

On Saturday afternoon, renewables – including wind, solar, geothermal and small hydropower projects – generated a record 67.2 per cent of the state’s power, controlled by the California Independent System Operator.

Specifically, at 3pm, 8.7 gigawatts GW of photovoltaic (PV) solar, 494 megawatts (MW) of concentrated solar power and 4,576 GW of wind power were recorded.

This follows a strong week of wind and solar generation, with solar reaching a record output of 9.87 GW on Thursday, followed by a peak wind production of nearly 4.8 GW on Saturday

I was wondering when this was going to happen.

I cant find a figure for England but no doubt they will be lagging far behind

1. What is Trumps stance on energy (all of it please)?
2. Exxon stands to benefit to the tune of ~ $ 1 trillion from that lying imbeciles presidency
3. Trex Tillerson has $200 million in Exxon shares
4. Exxon stood to benefit tremendously from the Saudi deal

Before I became forgetful and ill I spent my first decade on science sites and I argued the need for Nuclear Power - Suffice to say I changed my mind on that one about a decade ago. Even though I seem to think they come up with a new design-reactor, with a fuel that was a lot less wasteful - d you remeber which type that was and did they ever construct any?

We will always need "power stations from coal, gas oil" in reserve for when the wind doesn't blow. But these are easier to turn on and off.

There is no fail-safe design for a nuclear power station, no fail safe designs even from mother nature, nor human error, a spurious error, a cataclysm

Three mile island ( you never hear that get mentioned much)
Chernobyl - they have only recently encased that in a concrete dome with a design life of 100 years ( I think our best design for that place)

Coals too dirty - noone wants it, and everyone is trying to move away from it, as your thread implied :) I wonder how the global demand for coal is say the last 10 years? or 25-33 years?

We have one coal fired station for a population of 5.5 million - and that is due to close, belatedly. And is well beyond its deign life.
