Musicmystery -> Germany: "Europe must go own way" after Trump's disastrous visit (5/29/2017 7:42:02 AM)

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday declared a new chapter in U.S.-European relations after contentious meetings with President Trump last week, saying that Europe “really must take our fate into our own hands.”

It was the toughest review yet of Trump’s trip to Europe, which inflamed tensions rather than healed them after the U.S. president sparred with the leaders of Washington’s closest and oldest allies on trade, defense and climate change.

Merkel, Europe’s de facto leader, told a packed beer hall rally in Munich that the days when her continent could rely on others was “over to a certain extent. This is what I have experienced in the last few days.”

The comments came as Europe watches Britain preparing to leave the European Union and faces antagonism from Washington.

Merkel said that Europe’s move toward self-reliance should be carried out “of course in friendship with the United States of America, in friendship with Great Britain and as good neighbors wherever that works.”

It was an unusually stark declaration from the normally cautious head of Europe’s most powerful economy, and a grim take on the transatlantic ties that have underpinned Western security in the generations since World War II. Although relations between Washington and Europe have been strained at times since 1945, before Trump there has rarely been such a strong feeling from European leaders that they must turn away from Washington and prepare to face the world alone.

The German leader received a minute-long ovation for her comments, which came as she seeks to whip up voter support ahead of September elections. Although her message was partly aimed at her electorate, it was a measure of how badly relations have deteriorated with Trump’s United States that hitting Washington might win votes, while working with it could be perilous.

All I can say is they have not done a very good job in the past in taking their fate in their own hands. I happen to agree with President Trump when it comes to NATO...but of course he is going about it in a ridiculous incompetent manner.

If the west is going to have a common defense then ALL members must contribute equally. The time has past where the US can financially prop up the defense of Europe.

Merkel may be saying it but every country is & has been thinking it (well,.. except Russia & Saudi Arabia????) There are billions of people globally, the US has only 300 million.. China is now the largest economy in the world, India will push past the US in due course as well.. The US has used its position as a "world leader" strictly for its own benefit.. Perhaps this is a good thing for all other countries.. as their strength and self-reliance grows and civilized trade agreements with other countries develop, they will be in a much better position to tell the US to fuck off when it tries its bully tactics.. Trump is helping this along tremendously and we will see how much these other countries can grow in the next 8 years...

This is truly sad...

The U.S. is now looked upon by the rest of the world as a minor player. (Subservient to Russia, and now Europe).

"Marginalized" is the most accurate word for it. :(

It's sad, because, the world is more peaceful, and prosperous when countries can look to the U.S. for leadership. It is the steady hand of a competent U.S. President that brings stability in the world.

We definitely lack a competent U.S. President right now.

I am happy for you that you like that, but it is a sad day for most Americans, and the countries that look to the U.S. for leadership.

After Nato came to your aid in 2001, why would you want out now?
Is it just an inconvenience now?

Aid ? HA.

I don't see a downside here.

I bet if Clinton did it you would all cheer. That is now my opinion of liberals/democrats after all your inane posts on Trump. So, the shoe appears to fit and liberals now wear it. Wear it with pride, see you in 2020.

From your link-
"However, the U.S. economy loses its spot as the number one economy to China when measured in terms of GDP based on PPP. In these terms, China’s GDP is $21.3 trillion and the U.S. GDP is $18.5 trillion. However, the U.S. is way ahead of China in terms of GDP per capita (PPP) – approximately $57,294 in the U.S. versus $15,423 in China."

The US is stagnating, you dont want immigrants, you arent having kids, the US has ceased to be a growing market & incomes havent increased in real terms in decades, debt is rampant, you arent buying stuff anymore & its only the rich that are benefiting.
Countries like China, India, etc are developing and that is where the growth is now and will continue for decades in the future.. Their incomes are increasing, increasingly they are buying stuff & building, they will have the economic clout..
Trump & his protectionist BS is bad for the US but he/that is what America voted for... and y'all will vote him back in again in 4 years, just like you did Bush (which cost the US trillions for the illegal Iraq war & the 2008 recession/bail out)... What is it they say about history repeating? I think that if Trump doesnt start a major war (his tiny fingers are itching to shoot off those nukes), that would be a miracle.. but even if he doesnt, imo debt will increase massively under him and many Americans will suffer badly.. (but the rich will continue to get richer)..

it was a generally speaking "y'all".. [:D] Imo he will be Prez for 8 years, which means enough Americans will vote for him again.. just like they did with Bush.. I have to say, I think Obama is really enjoying his retirement.. he is looking years younger..
