The rise of Tory attack ads on Facebook

The Conservatives seem to be targeting Facebook users in marginal constituencies with anti-Jeremy Corbyn attack adverts, designed to draw away the Labour faithful.

Labour are also using Facebook advertising, but their messages are not focused on leaders and their personalities.

BBC Trending is working with BBC Newsnight and BBC local radio to shed light on the role of social media advertising in the general election.

We've asked readers, viewers and listeners to send examples of political adverts that you've noticed on your social media feeds. We're trying to overcome the opaque nature of political Facebook advertising (often dubbed "dark advertising") which is often only seen by the people who are targeted.

We have been able to identify a few clear trends from the hundreds of ads that we've been sent so far.
Here's the strongest: the Conservatives are paying for numerous adverts that attack Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn or his close allies, particularly John McDonnell and Diane Abbott. They broadcast a broadly negative message - warning people about the perceived threats of a Corbyn-led government.

Is there no depths of depravity the RWNJ will not sink too

Big mad scary typing in the Averts too - to induce fear and alarm and implant subliminal messages into the minds of the sheople

They lack the capacity to fight it on their current track record of 7 years of brutal cuts to everyone save the rich, facts and their manifesto- which was truly shocking.

Might easily backfire, though. Once Mr Joseph H. Fotherington-Public gets it into his head that someone's trying to manipulate him, he gets indignant. Especially re Corbyn, who - despite his failings - has such a rep, versus almost everybody else in the Commons, for honesty and uprightness.

There's pretty wide approval of Labour's manifesto. As for Corbyn being likeable: he's the nearest I've ever been to having a possible PM in my social circle. That is: not in it, but I know people who've been pals with him at one time or another. The gist of what they say is that he's a straight-talker even in private - very, very honest. Well, if there'd been real dirt on him, the press would have served it up before now, of course.

Obviously I don't vote labour. But that manifesto truly stood out. And I see the press bashing his character, and to an extent the BBC too; which I find a little worrying.

I hope the young voters turn out. Or we are all fuked, again.

Actually i voted labour once at 18 when Thatcher was in, and me being an idealist idiot I viewed that as a tactical vote. Yet mad maggie got in again.

How about Michael Foot? Corbyn reminds me a lot of him.

Good luck with that - the BBC aren't too good themselves, not at all unbiased.

The Tries are now attacking Corbyn on You Tube as well.
A lot of money is at stake here for them, among other things selling the NHS.

From what I have seen and heard, a vast amount of people act like sheep, repeating what the papers tell them to think apparently without ever giving it a second thought.

I do not see that Corbyn has more failings than other politicians. But people keep saying it..

So do I, and a whole lot of other people. There is not need to apologize. His manifesto makes sense.

I vote for SNP and I am left of centre - not that that's difficult to work out. The UK has many political parties.

Differentiate between Scotland and England...and Wales and Nothern Ireland

The main parties

Scotland: as a nation we voted to remain within the EU but the English jackals voted us out
1. Scottish Nationalist Party
2. Conservatives - Tory Scumbag party - I know their 15-25% are beating labour
3. Labour
etc

England:
1. Conservatives - Tory Scumbag party
2. Labour
3. Liberal democrats - who is this lot again?
etc

Wales
1. Labour - I think
2. Plaid Cymru
3. Conservatives - Tory Scumbag party

Northern Ireland
fuked if I know?
just give it back to the Republic of Ireland ffs

That aside best manifesto I have seen and I would be saying that if the Tory Scumbag party came up with it - when hell freezes over for they are vultures.

As for that manifesto its nothing an Independent Scotland wouldn't do ;) and we have already did the odd bit and bob off it.

But we have grown uneasy, out-right terrified, with some of English mindset - well the ones bordering on RWNJ.

The same as happens to most boutique artists: still touring and recording, but generally ignored by most of the media now that her fifteen minutes are up.
(To be fair, she probably could have stopped working and retired on the royalties she's made from people covering her stuff thirty years ago.)
