Hurricane season starts with nobody in charge at FEMA or NOAA

Five months after Donald J. Trump was sworn in as president, no one has taken the reins at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which is in charge of preparing for and then dealing with the aftermath of a hurricane. The last FEMA boss was a Florida man, W. Craig Fugate, who departed in January after seven years on the job. Fugate previously served as the head of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. Trump finally nominated someone at the end of April, but he has yet to be confirmed.

Trump meanwhile has made no move to appoint a new boss at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the agency in charge of the National Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service, which provide hurricane forecasts and hurricane warnings in advance of a storm.

Incidentally, NOAA Is predicting an above-average hurricane season this year. Trump's proposed budget has targeted both agencies for cuts.

Yeah, when are we going to lock up all the nutsuckers and drain the swamp? Nutsuckers are the authors of the 20+ trillion in debt. Drain that nutsucker retarded country destroying swamp.

kdsub -> RE: Hurricane season starts with nobody in charge at FEMA or NOAA (6/3/2017 8:26:02 AM)

It could be that he is having trouble finding qualified people. I think it is because those qualified for the posts do not want to be associated with the backward thinking of the White House... They would be marked as political hacks and spurned in their field of study.

You know, most of the posters here, over the years, have had opportunity to display their particular areas of expertise and excellence.

Except you. No apparent skill, no apparent particular knowledge, no apparent successes, no apparent talents -- just a lot of bluster, ridicule, and wildly unsupported criticism.

While you're ranting, others are doing, accomplishing, improving themselves and the world.

Something to think about. Any moron can tear down.

Try building something. Be of use.

Add some value.

Bosco, first, NOAA happens to be the people responsible for tracking hurricanes, storm systems that produce tornadoes and other weather related issues.

They are also the group that pays for people that go out and risk their lives tracking storms that produce tornadoes to get as much information as possible to come up with better ways to predict which storms will and will not produce tornadoes and try to improve the science behind the warnings.

Since I live in a part of the country which is often hit by tornadoes, I kind of like the fact the agency exists.

And considering that there is now going to be a lot more offshore oil exploration and drilling, those crews might, just might, be interested in knowing if a hurricane is coming their way.

You know, so they can shut down operations to keep things like oil spills, and the like from happening, and of course, getting killed on the rig itself when it is hit.

So, why dont you go fuck yourself with a stick of dynamite? Do the world a favor.

As for FEMA, one of two things needs to happen with that agency, 1) get people who actually know how to respond to major disasters in a timely manner (as someone reminded us, Katrina was a joke, it was five days before FEMA was actually able to do anything in New Orleans, and further south in the delta, as long as 20 days) or shut the agency down and come up with something better.

Sorry, but FEMA is a joke of mismanagement and inability to actually function in a crisis.

Musicmystery -> RE: Hurricane season starts with nobody in charge at FEMA or NOAA (6/3/2017 8:32:50 AM)

It didn't used to be -- until Bush put in a political appointee instead of someone qualified.

Who's spent that sort of money on those two agencies in living memory?
One of the reasons for the Katrina fiasco being such a clusterfuck for its victims was down to George II cutting funding to FEMA and appointing a crony of his whose experience went no further than running livestock shows as its head.

Musicmystery -> RE: Hurricane season starts with nobody in charge at FEMA or NOAA (6/3/2017 8:41:16 AM)

In 2016:

$5.6 billion -- NOAA
$13.9 billion -- FEMA

Total: $18.9 billion.

So his "twenty trillion" claim is off by $19,981,100,000,000 -- nearly $20 trillion!

So he can rejoice -- the old budget already saves this.

Well maybe if you Leftists had gotten off your ass and voted, we wouldn't be in this mess.

Or even better. Perhaps if you hadn't supported a corrupt Democratic Party and their corrupt candidate, we could've been living under President Sanders.

Just reminding you of your culpability.

You're welcome.

Musicmystery -> RE: Hurricane season starts with nobody in charge at FEMA or NOAA (6/3/2017 8:44:34 AM)

Pathetic.

1) I voted.
2) I didn't support the corrupt Democratic Party.
3) I campaigned for and financially supported Sanders.

So pack up your straw man and go home.

As a fraction of twenty trillion, those sums are negligible, true enough.
