After a bit more research, I find that humanity may solve the problem through the evolutionary process of natural selection. 90% epidemiologists actually believe that the world will see another pandemic that will rival that of the Spanish Flu of 1918 in impact. Now considering that we have effective treatments for flu viruses, we could see a world wide death toll of 165 million people, since flu runs about 2% mortality rate. However, if the pandemic is something out of the SARS virus family, which has a 25% mortality rate, and a very high infection rate, we could see the world population cut by significantly just from the virus itself. The further good news is that with the over stressed support services unable to cope, the incidental death rate (panic induced riots, looting, etc.) could take out half the current world population. Figure another third from the after effects of the first two.... Factor it the fact that at least 3 of the known super volcanoes are technically over due for eruptions... By the turn of the next century, the earth population could be that of the last quarter of the 19th century. Besides, why should the conservatives worry about the planet anyway, they are very good at creating problems their grandchildren have to fix.
