ORIGINAL: kdsub No.. the posse were sworn deputies of the law... not Joe blow cowboy with a six shooter taking the law into his own hands. Butch This wasn't always necessarily the case. Here is an interesting story about sheriff David Updyke. As was often the case, an outlaw in one area would move on and become a sheriff in another area, or vise versa. It seems that characteristics that make good outlaws are similar to the characteristics of good law enforcement. Seems very much similar today. http://www.legendsofamerica.com/id-davidupdyke.html P.S. As an aside, here is a little known fact. When you hear about the stage robberies of the old west you usually hear about Texas, Oklahoma, Arizone, etc. However, due to the huge amount of gold taken out of the area, there were more stagecoach holdups in Idaho than in any other state.
