Now, there's talk of Sinn Fein taking up their seats at Westminster. This really has become maelstrom.

It would be downright bloody surreal. The latest news from Sinn Fein is an 'absolutely not'. Well, as Ron says: absolutely worth staying up to watch if it happens.

That seems most unlikely to me. Attempts to change Sinn Fein's policy of 'abstentionism' have caused several splits in the Republican Movement over the decades. I can't see them doing simply because it's politically opportune at the moment.

Things might change radically if Sinn Fein see the DUP grabbing big gains for itself at Westminster. I'd expect things to happen suddenly, or not at all. Most likely not at all, sure ... but this is a very, very odd situation we're in, now.

That said: can you see them bearing to let the unionists steal a march on them over this?

I can see why that option might appear appealing to Sinn Fein as things stand at the moment.

But if Sinn Fein were to adopt this policy it would be at the cost of a split in its own ranks. I don't see them paying that price for (what they would see as a) short term political advantage.

They've split their ranks for much less than a presence in Westminster before now, and back then they didn't have to worry about the unionists getting to lean on Britain's supposed ruling party, either.
It may not be likely, but I still wouldn't rule out. "Likely" doesn't seem to be much of a factor in politics these days, does it?

I take it she is allowed to form a minority government by default because you lot think you need an elected govt. Look over here. We have gotten along without a proper govt. since 20 Jan. The "deep state" can jolly well carry on assuming a continuing budget resolution in the absent of any Congressmen.

And all this while I thought your system was superior and more boring than ours, ha! Wrong, weren't I?

Oh no, Vincent. Has any Brit ever said that here? Not that I've seen. Ours is a very, very antiquated system. It's not been up to the job for a long time now.

I think they would, were it to come to even a whiff of a referendum on unification of the North and the Republic. That would be a long term political advantage, though. Split in the ranks - yes, quite possibly - but they've got used to having that for the sake of what's seen as long term advantage - it happened with the Good Friday agreement. Even the IRA split, with groups like the Real IRA forming. But it largely worked out, later. Politics in NI isn't the same as here in England - they assume that punch ups will be involved.

That said, at least under the UK system a bankrupt celebrity and failed businessmen couldn't stand for election as the nation's leader without being elected to a seat in parliament first.
