My point was that people will seek out an ideology in which they place their faith in. Empires historically have chosen ideologies and forced them upon their people as a means of control. We really don't see that in modern day religions. Good point. The Soviets did that. Most empires developed for financial gain I think. And you are right, people are tribal and they succumb to ideologies. We don't see it in modern day religions because the overriding ideology today is nationalism. quote:
While Islam asserts that there is no compulsion in religion, they do charge a fee to those who are not Muslims to live in their society as a kind of 'protection fee'. They also do not allow their women to marry a non-muslim. These types of devices are not part of other religions, and they are the kinds of things that, over time, would cause more people to adopt islam rather than other religions. Thank you, tamaka, I learned something here. I will post a link to a Wiki article which is very informative, although it is a bit repetitious. What I took away from it was that Jews were okay with the protection fee because it was cheaper than they had to pay in Christian empires. Christians were not at all happy about the Muslim protection fee. What they got in return besides besides safety, this is my takeaway from the article, they had their own laws and courts and they were free to pursue their professions. Mixed marriages are still a problem among some Jews and Christians today. My farther-in-law and my wife's uncle were pissed at me until their deaths because I married their little Jewish girl. SOURCE
