Back in January, in a move clearly designed to rev up his base, Donald Trump persuaded Ford not to move a large manufacturing plant to Mexico. In typical Trump fashion, he made sure the entire world knew, tweeting: “Thank you to Ford for scrapping a new plant in Mexico and creating 700 new jobs in the U.S. This is just the beginning - much more to follow.”

Apparently, it really was just the beginning, because Ford is now moving the plant to China. Salon writes, “In 2019, after production ends at the current factory in Michigan, the second-largest car company in America will move Ford Focus manufacturing to China," in a story first reported by The New York Times.

The plant’s move perfectly illustrates the difficulty of Trump’s just-talk-corporations-out-of-outsourcing-jobs strategy. Trump’s incentives for companies to keep their factories in the U.S. can't compete with all the money that can be reaped from moving to places with lower wages.

“I beat the people from China. I win against China. You can win against China if you’re smart. But our people don’t have a clue. We give state dinners to the heads of China. I said why are you doing state dinners for them? They’re ripping us left and right. Just take them to McDonald’s and go back to the negotiating table,” Trump said in July 2015. So much for “winning” against China.

All of the bombastic rhetoric aside, the corp. being a for-profit, authoritarian, non-sovereign entity...has not a bit of interest in society at large beyond its profitability, i.e., its member's ability to borrow the money to buy its products or services.

Oh but lower corp. taxes and [they] won't leave, never mind...'leave' just wherever they are...is. Corp. taxes having dropped from [its] peak of 4% to 2% of GDP, it should be obvious certainly and for some decades by now, those billions in profits stashed overseas would still be there and the corporation no longer creates jobs, they eliminate them...or move them.

Lowering corp. taxes simply enables them to buy up their competition and suppliers and...their stock back.

It was over 5 years ago that the CEO of GM stated publicly that 7 out of 10 Chevys were now made in China. Shoot, if you want an American assembled car; Nissan and Toyota build more cars in the U.S. than GM these days.

My take on GM trucks is that they have wonderful body styling and advertising campaigns. But, when I was looking for a new truck; a test drive of several GM made trucks all hat a disturbing common thing. The thing that bugged me and caused me to reject purchasing GM was pieces of the dashboard falling off when hitting bumps on a test drive. Nothing says poor quality control like having a button off of the steering wheel fall into your lap when hitting a small pothole.

I ended up getting a Dodge Ram with a Cummins diesel... no regret at all.

Trump claims credit for something he didn't do - that's hardly the first time that has happened.
Trump's victory claims turn out to be empty and false and he loses to the Chinese - hardly the first time that has happened either.
Is any one surprised?
Perhaps those naive fools who believed Trump's promises and claims will be .... though I for one am not holding out much hope of that either. If Trump was caught red handed handing secrets to the Russians for bags of cash, I wouldn't be surprised, but his base and our resident looney Right Trumptooners would find some way of rationalising his treachery away.

God help the USA

And for the rest of the story.
Ford will also be investing “$900 million in a Kentucky plant to produce new versions of its Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator sport-utility vehicles,” which the company said will save 1,000 jobs at the plant.

That's not "the rest of the story." That's a different story -- unless you believed Ford, a global company, was moving its entire operation to China.

And, "saving jobs," while nice, is hardly building them. The building jobs is happening in ... China.

Paid for by the move to China, saving $1 billion/yr. Ford is trying to grow its truck and SUV supply here. Sedans are leaving.

Plus just last month, Ford Motor Company is expected to announce later this week plans to gut 10 percent of its 200,000-person salaried workforce in North American and Asia, according to multiple reports late Monday.

The layoffs will go into effect by Oct. 1 and employees will receive early retirement incentives.

The new threat to jobs came the same day President Trump touted the announcement by Ford of investments at facilities in Michigan, claiming his administration is promoting job growth. In reality, there has been a continuing stream of temporary and permanent layoff announcements since Trump has taken office.

General Motors announced additional layoffs this week in Michigan as reported US auto sales in May showed a continuing decline. GM says it is eliminating a shift at its Warren, Michigan transmission plant outside Detroit in late June, affecting some 300 jobs. The facility builds transmissions for 11 different GM models. The company says that the cuts are in response to slowing sales and reduced demand for passenger cars.

Just released sales figures for May show the fifth straight month of auto sales decreases. The beginning of the Trump legacy.

Well yea, but those 'jobs' exist...here. Ford is just moving them.

According to the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics for 2012, there were 254,639,386 registered vehicles. Of these, 183,171,882 were classified as "Light duty vehicle, short wheel base", while another 50,588,676 were listed as "Light duty vehicle, long wheel base". Another 8,190,286 were classified as vehicles with two axles and six or more tires and 2,469,094 were classified as "Truck, combination". There were 8,454,939 motorcycles also listed along with 764,509 buses.

Point -- there are more registered vehicles than drivers in the US. It's a dying market.

Now CHINA on the other hand -- it makes sense to build cars there.

Yeah, I've been a steady Toyota customer since 1993, and ex-GM customer.

China comes to America.

Electric vehicle maker to buy AM General plant in Indiana

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - An electric vehicle manufacturer plans to buy an AM General assembly plant in northern Indiana and invest $30 million in upgrades at the facility.

SF Motors and AM General didn’t announce a price Thursday for the commercial assembly plant in Mishawaka. The agreement also includes land and some equipment, but the companies say it won’t affect AM General’s military assembly plant or military-related business.

SF Motors plans to keep all the plant’s roughly 430 workers.

More: Chinese electric car maker to invest $10.7M in Washtenaw, create 150 jobs.

Interesting piece! Thanks. I wish you hadn't cherry picked your quotes, starting with the subheadline:
"But for how long?"

In short:
- wages are increasing in China, making it less attractive
- robots make building things here more effective (for now)

“If you had an assembly plant that was making 500 cars a day and you shut it down 20 years ago and you offshored the production, and you move the plant here again, now you’re going to be making the same number of cars with maybe half as many people,” Moser says.

The question then becomes how long this mutually beneficial trend will last before the robots take over.

Manufacturing is still down a third from 1980.

Notice the tumble and only partial recovery of the Reagan/Bush I "trickle down" fallacy, then progress in the prosperity of the Clinton years, then the huge tumble in the doubled down trickle-down of the Bush II economic disaster, and the recovery starting shortly after Obama takes office.
