darkinshadows -> Poly Terms? (7/27/2006 9:20:02 AM)

Ok... I am kind of slightly bemused.  I sat and watched a (UK) programme on Polyamory last night, and was a little dis-satisfied by the TV programmes misuse of terms.
Remembering this is a UK programme, that was filmed in the USA and all participants were from the states.

Now if I am wrong here - I will hold hands up and apologise.  But the programme claimed that polyamory was more than one partner within marriage.  And that polygamy was male with multiple females.

Now, I have always been taught that polyamory was multi parners, regardless of marriage. And that polygamy was multiple with marriage existing somewhere in the mix.  That polygyny was male with multiple female partners, and polyandry was female with multiple male partners.  Bigamy is illegally multiple marriage.

Is Channel Four trying to change terms?

That is my thoughts too.  Wondering if i have been wrong all this time.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Poly Terms? (7/27/2006 10:01:24 AM)

You're right; they're wrong.  The only thing I'd add is that bigamy isn't NECESSARILY illegal.  In other words, it means having two spouses, and is not limited to illegally having two spouses.  Having two spouses just happens to be illegal in most places.

I have tried to search terms - and still find bigamy to be the illegal representation of multiple marriages and polygamy (greek meaning 'many marriages') the legal representation?

I was just a bit annoyed I guess that they misused the terms. (Although I know that happens alot within the media). Either that or I got it wrong.

No, "bigamy" just means having two spouses and "polygamy" just means having more than one spouse.  Neither one is inherently legal or illegal.

In todays world I guess many things has changed, In my time, Polyamous relationships simply meant one dominant, To two or more slaves, All living in the same house hold. For the slaves to live else where, Was just sex on the side. Now The dominant can be either male or female and so can the slaves,  Some even have both male and female slaves, But, The difference here is that they must all live within the same house. I believe those in the Mormon religion also had  true poly relationships in the past, But stopped that for some reason.....Bigamy is when two or more are vanilla wise married to the same person.....

hi ya dark hunny,

i remember speaking to LaMalinche about this a few weeks ago, and when i saw your post i spoke to Lord Vandal (VandalHeart on here), and He reliably informs me that:

Polyandry - more than one husband
Polygyny - more than one wife
Polygamy - more than one spouse

Polyamory - more than one partner, no marriage involved
Bigamy - illegal multiple marriages

hope this answers your query hunny.

luv,

shiv
xx

You've generally got it right. Polygamy means all partnerships are marriages, not marriage exists somewhere. Bigamy does not MEAN illegal multiple marriages, though bigamy (like polygamy) is illegal in the US and more than a few other places. Bigamy means a three person marriage structured as a V, or one person with two spouses.

Uhh, not too reliably.  "Bigamy" just means having two spouses.  No more, no less.  It's not necessarily illegal.  And it doesn't refer to multiple marriages--just two.  We've already gone over this.

i always thought bigamy was a legal term for a man having more then one wife??  Which is illegal if he misinforms the second one and marries her through the courts.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Poly Terms? (7/31/2006 7:33:11 AM)

People, please read the whole thread before doing the Insta-Reply "I've always thought that..."  Because we've been over this shit time and time again at this point.  Having more than one wife is called "polygyny."  Either a man or a woman can be a bigamist, and bigamy is not inherently illegal.  It just happens to be illegal in most places.

MistressStchWich -> RE: Poly Terms? (7/31/2006 9:31:11 AM)

Webster's Universal College Dictionary offers a second definition or polygamy; zoological in reference, which I think would be more applicable to what most Lifestylers intend to communicate when they refer to polygamy:

"The habit or system of mating with more than one individual, either simultaneously or successively."

And defines bigamy as exactly: "The act of marrying one person while still being legally married to another."

Which is how I understood them before I read the definitions. Mating and marrying are two very different and separate acts (although marrying will help insure the opportunity to mate...LOL.)

While it is nice to know I am classified as a polyandress- (hehehe,)-  I wasn't aware of the gender specific terms. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn they exist and what they are.

Hope I have been a help to someone in return.

I'd say they are incorrect in their use of the term polyamory. They are using polygamy in it's most common sense -- meaning that polygyny is much more common than polyandry so when someone says polygamy they think more than one wife usually.

Write them a letter about it. Never hurts to try and educate those who claim to be educating via mass media.

darkinshadows -> RE: Poly Terms? (7/31/2006 3:54:40 PM)

Yup - I was actually thinking of doing that so I am thankful someone else suggested it also.  I definately will now.
I will let all know what happens in due course.
