tweakabelle -> Happy 150th Birthday Canada! (7/2/2017 2:22:24 AM)

It's Canada's 150th birthday.

Prime Minister Trudeau marked the occasion by declaring:
“Canada is a country made strong not in spite of our differences but because of them. We don’t aspire to be a melting pot. Indeed, we know true strength and resilience flows through Canadian diversity.”
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jul/01/celebrations-across-canada-mark-countrys-150th-birthday
The message was: We don't care where you are from, what religion you practice or who you love, you are all welcome here! Even stuffy old Prince Charles acknowledged Canada's role as one of the world's leaders in human rights.

Canada's open inclusive policies are sharp contrast to its bigger southern neighbour, and to my country Australia, neither of which has distinguished itself with their vicious minority baiting, anti-refugee and/or immigration policies.

So well done and happy birthday Canada, long may you continue to show the rest of us the way forward.

Seconded!

[Though it's sometimes weird for me to think that I'm surrounded by still-occupied houses that are older than Canada.]

Too bad that Trudeau forgot a whole province (Alberta) in his speech.. he needs to have his bottom paddled for that.. [>:] and I am still waiting for him to reinstate my right to vote!

How about some Randy Newman?

I was just ruminating on the similarities between Trudeau and Trump.

That was one pretty damned quick bit of ruminating ....

Actually, that's true of the home-nations of most people on this board, isn't it? There's a graveyard, ten minutes' walk from where I live. Some of the gravestones are from the 1760s. (That's just the gravestones whose inscriptions are still legible, mind.) A graveyard that's older than the USA, Canada, Australia, NZ ... it's a really screwy thought.

Still, all you colonials have done *very well indeed*, despite your respective national youthfulness, and you all deserve to give yourselves a *hearty clap on the back*! [:)]

Canada as a nation has only been around but John Cabot landed in Newfoundland in 1497 and Quebec was founded around 1535

I think the landmass has been there since before the British isles were still connected to mainland Europe, come to that.

Well,.. both of their ratings have dropped.. (that is a similarity right there).. Trudeau is down to 42% in Canada..

apparently Americans love him tho cuz (apparently) 4 out of 10 Americans would rather have Trudeau as Prez of the USA instead of Trump... Yes America,.. take him, please!

Exclusive: Almost half of Canadians want illegal border crossers deported - Reuters poll

Illegals fleeing from Trump to Canada not faring too well there either

Thousands of illegal immigrants who fled to Canada in fear of Trump are trapped in legal limbo without jobs, permanent homes or schools for their kids

Cabot sailed from my home city, Bristol. There's a replica of his ship. the Matthew, moored a couple of hundred yards from where I live. It's *so* tiny, Baldrick. You look at it and think, 'How the hell did that glorified beer barrel get across the Atlantic?' They were made of true grit in those days, sure enough.
