Trump lashes out at states for withholding voter data

President Donald Trump has criticised the growing number of US states refusing to pass on voters' details to his commission on electoral fraud.

"What are they trying to hide?", Mr Trump tweeted. Tax returns? Visitors log?

At least 20 states have said that they will not or only partly comply with the request, citing privacy concerns.

Democrats fear that the commission may be used to justify tightening voting procedures - changes which could make certain groups less likely to vote.

The groups most affected by so-called voter suppression tend to vote Democrat.
Trump's voter fraud talk has liberals worried

But it is not just Democrats who are opposed to the collection of such data by the federal government.

Mississippi's Secretary of State, Delbert Hosemann, a Republican, said in an official statement that his reply to the commission would be "they can go jump in the Gulf of Mexico and Mississippi is a great state to launch from".

Mr Trump set up the commission to investigate claims - unsubstantiated, but which he repeats - that millions of fraudulent votes cost him the popular vote in the 2016 presidential election.

He secured more votes in the all-important electoral college than his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, thus winning the presidency.

Mr Trump established the Presidential Advisory commission on Election Integrity in May, despite evidence that voter fraud is not a widespread problem in the US.

The aim is to "increase the American people's confidence in the integrity of our election systems".

Kentucky's Secretary of State, Alison Lundergan Grimes, said she would not be releasing "sensitive personal data to the federal government".

"Kentucky will not aid a commission that is at best a waste of taxpayer money and at worst an attempt to legitimise voter suppression efforts across the country," she said in a statement.

The panel, described by Mr Trump as "very distinguished," is chaired by Vice-President Mike Pence.

On Wednesday its vice-chair, Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, sent a letter to the 50 US states and the District of Columbia requesting details from voter rolls including: names, addresses, dates of birth, political affiliation, last four digits of social security number, voting history since 2006, criminal convictions and military status. (WTF)

The information would be used "to fully analyse vulnerabilities and issues related to voter registration and voting," the letter said.
Many other states, including California, Connecticut, Minnesota and Alabama have said they will not send the information, or will only send information that is already publically available.

Gregg Phillips: The man claiming 3m illegal votes

The claim: Donald Trump would have won the popular vote in last year's US presidential election had it not been for people voting illegally.
Reality Check verdict: There is no evidence to support the assertion that at least 2.86 million people voted illegally.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer confirmed on Tuesday that President Donald Trump stands by his concerns about illegal voting.
The disclosure came after the president was reported to have claimed in a closed meeting on Monday that between three and five million unauthorised immigrants had voted for Hillary Clinton.
At the end of November, Mr Trump tweeted: "I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally."
While the president won the election via the electoral college, he actually received 2.86 million fewer votes than his rival.
So his suggestion is that at least 2% of the people who voted did so illegally, assuming that they all voted for Mrs Clinton.

So he now wants the name and address of everybody who didn't vote for him.
But of course, releasing a log of his visitors to the white house is unacceptable as those named there might be hassled by evil leftists.
This level of hypocrisy would be hilarious were it less pathetic.

BitaTruble -> RE: Trump lashes out at states for withholding voter data (7/2/2017 5:59:21 AM)

The federal government already has everyone's name, date of birth, full social security number. I'm sure he just wants to make sure his kids actually voted..at least once.

5 new threads just this morning. You need to relax. Have a cocktail or two. Enjoy the weekend.

So, alt left trash screams that the election was hacked... But refuse to let anyone have a look at the data, because they know we will find out that it was them who have been hacking it

You know that isn't what he is trying to do.
They don't want to co-operate because they know they have been cheating.
If that were not the case they would open up and then when it turned out they didn't it would give them something great to attacking him.

Would you say the same thing about Mr. Trump's taxes?

No, as you know there is no legal requirment for him to do so.
Voter fraud is a serious crime.

Rachel Maddow showed Trump's return on her tv show.

I would be more interested in who illegal released the return than the return, after all if he did something illegal the IRS would already have him.

There is no legal requirement for states to turn over voter information either.

As for a tax return... We need a Constitutional amendment requiring any candidate running for President to release 10 years of tax returns. We have MUCH lower requirements JUST to get a Security Clearance.

So you agree that there is no requirement for him to turn them over.
If we had a constitutional amendmnt for every thing more important than this we would have 100 in no time at all.
I never said they were required to participate in the attempt to root out election fraud I said they have no legitimate reason not to.
That is one of the constitutional amendments that would come ahead of tax returns.

More important than determining, what business dealings a Presidential candidate has??? To whom he owes money/favors?

No legitimate reason not to hand over voter roll information to Kris Kobach????

Bama: You are the ULTIMATE Big Government Kool-Aid drinker.

Think about what you are saying: It is more important to root out election fraud, than for the voters to know who they are voting for.

Who cares how badly the vote is distorted. As they say in Mexico it isn't as important who gets the votes as who counts them.
And you don't want tax returns, you want a complete discloser of all business records.
I am certain that Hillary's selling nuke materials to the russians didn't show up on her tax returns, at least not in that form.

Lucylastic -> RE: Trump lashes out at states for withholding voter data (7/2/2017 11:01:58 PM)

so why are you against gun registration and background checks???
with thrump, your internet life is recorded and sold, now kobachs scheme will have you voting records, criminal conviction record, etc etc etc so whats wrong with having background checks on all gun sales?
its not guns that need regulating, its people.
oh right.... freedom for your religion....

why is Kobach refusing to do what his letter requires?

MakeM3Urs -> RE: Trump lashes out at states for withholding voter data (7/2/2017 11:11:10 PM)

If this had been a question of votes that were only concerned with state candidates and issues then I could agree to let the states withhold the information. But since this was a federal election and the issue of voter fraud/interference is on the table I think the states should be made to release the info and let it all get sorted out. One way or other we the American people should know the truth.

Lucylastic -> RE: Trump lashes out at states for withholding voter data (7/2/2017 11:16:47 PM)

if they are willing to fix gerry mandering and voter suppression I would agree with you.
The only reason this IS on the table is because trump claimed there were 3 million illegal votes.
you think this is going to prove it?

MakeM3Urs -> RE: Trump lashes out at states for withholding voter data (7/2/2017 11:37:04 PM)

Gerrymandering has always been a back and forth problem, that won't end until some independent body is formed to control the makeup of voting districts. Voter suppression was a problem in the past, I'm not sure it is today. As for Trump claiming vote fraud to the tune of 3 million, why would anyone not want that to be investigated and resolved?

Well since he claims this is a Democratic operation, Republicans would want it resolved and , if true the Democrats wouldn't. That is why , regardless of thier reasons this makes them look bad.

The problem is that of the few instances of verified voter fraud I have seen about half were.............Republicans and half were Dems.
Mr Trump is just pulling this as a way to distract from the fact that someone needs to take a sledgehammer to his phone.
Many have said (including, I think, you) that if someone won't voluntarily release something, they must be hiding something. WTF is he hiding then?
