ORIGINAL: WickedsDesire LHC double heavy particle to shine light on strong force Scientists have detected a new particle at the Large Hadron Collider at Cern. The discovery will help researchers learn more about the so-called "strong force" which holds the centres of atoms together. The existence of the new particle was theoretically predicted but this is the first time it has been identified. The details of the Xi-cc++ particle were presented at a high-energy physics conference in Venice. The study was carried out at the LHCb experiment and led by Dr Patrick Spradlin of Glasgow University. He said that the discovery would "shed light on a longstanding puzzle and open an exciting new branch of investigation". His colleague, Prof Paul Soler, also from Glasgow University, described the development as "a new frontier in understanding the strong force". Nearly all the matter that we see around us is made of neutrons and protons, which form the centres of atoms. These are made up of three smaller particles called quarks which can be either light or heavy. New arrangement There are, however, six different types of quarks which combine in different ways to form other kinds of particle. Those that have been detected so far contain at most, one heavy quark. This is the first time that researchers have confirmed the existence of one with two heavy quarks. According to Prof Guy Wilkinson of Oxford University, there is an intriguing difference between the new particle and the ones that have been discovered before. "In contrast to other particles of this type, in which the three quarks perform an elaborate dance around each other, a particle with two heavy quarks is expected to act like a planetary system, where the heavy quarks are like two stars orbiting one around the other, with the lighter quark orbiting around this binary system." The research team will now measure the properties of the Xi-cc++ to establish how this new arrangement of quarks behaves and how the strong force holds the system together. They also expect to find more double heavy quark particles. Another unusual property of the particle is that it has two positive charges double that of the proton and it is four times heavier. There are six types of quarks, known as flavors: up, down, strange, charm, top, and bottom - kinky lot arnt they I wonder where this new type of particle is originating from Are we creating a new type of energy or is a new type of energy being inflicted upon us. You do understand what the LHC does right? It smashes atoms together at incredible speeds so we can see what they're made of. Nothing is being created or destroyed, it's simply the shattering of building blocks into their smaller building blocks. Plus, this technically isn't even a "type of energy" it's an arrangement of quarks that provide the force that is spoken of above. Maybe you should put down the bible and pick up a physics textbook for once [X(] What a dick. Maybe as a loony leftist you should have some tolerance for people having thei own path. I mean, you loony leftist say you're tolerant don't you? Perhaps you can stop being a dick and demonstrate it. There is people taking their own path, and then there is wilful ignorance. If you can't even understand the science, why bother commenting on it? I'm tolerant of a lot of things, but idiots bringing religion into science is something I've got no respect for. Science explains the real world while religion gives people warm feelings about their place in the world. Bounty is right that reading a physics book and the bible aren't mutually exclusive, but mixing the contents of those books absolutely is mutually exclusive. One offers a view based on fantasy, the other is based on observation. I'd rather live in reality, not with my head in the sky. If that makes me a dick then so be it, at least I'm a dick who's aware of what's going on in the world instead of what I imagine is going on. And there you go. That's how fascism takes hold. We say we're tolerant except. Way to go little facist. Fascism takes hold when I try to force you to abandon your beliefs in favour of my own. Just because I lack respect for those with a poor grasp on science due to their own wilfull ignorance does not mean I'm forcing you to change your beliefs. Believe what you want and say what you want, that's free speech. But it's also my guaranteed free speech to tell you that you're an idiot for the reasons I listed above. If you got an issue with my free speech, then you have an issue with your own constitution, which in many ways would make you a traitor to the very principles you hold dear. I mean, you have made it clear multiple times you're not tolerant of various groups or ways of thinking, so how does that NOT make you a fascist per your own definition?
