No, mental illness should not be any excuse. Death. Anyone who takes the life of another without good reason is not right in the head. Does that become the defense ? You like the Twinkie defense too ? Elect me dictator and I will show you change, and you'll have more rights than you had before. But with those rights comes responsibility. For example drunk driving, perfectly legal. But if you have a fender bender it is vandalism, because you caused your state. Cause an injury assault with a deadly weapon. Cause a death, murder one. And if there is no doubt that it is your fault that means the death penalty. Bring personal responsibility back into it. Same thing if you are high or drunk and playing with a gun and someone gets hurt. Even a table saw. Responsible for your actions. That is why we keep certain things away from kids. Not too long ago I used to do carpentry, and I have a table saw with no guard on it at all. That makes it easier to use and able to do more things. I know respect for machines so that is the way I use it. However, for most of my projects I do the cutting outside. The neighbor has kids who sometimes would wander into our yard, so as I cut a piece of wood, before taking it into the house and mounting it, I would unplug the saw. But I digress, and worse than you here. Far as the OP goes, how can part of the family oppose the punishment of some who killed one of them ? The only answer that makes any sense is that the decedent was an abuser and kept it very well hidden. Those abused would oppose the execution, being well rid of him. Do you (or anyone) have any other logical explanation for this ? Or maybe some of them are opposed to taking a human life no matter what. Well what did he do ? It is some sort of religious thing with some people. We kill. They might not get it, yet. T^T
