Virginia execution splits murder victim's family

The execution of a Virginia man convicted of killing two men has gone ahead, despite claims he suffered from mental health problems.

William Morva, 35, was given the lethal injection at 21:00 local time (01:00 GMT) and died 15 minutes later.

He was convicted of the 2006 killings of a hospital security guard and a sheriff's deputy.

The deputy's daughter was among thousands who had urged the Virginia governor to grant clemency.
But the deputy's mother disagreed, and did not want Morva's life to be spared.

Morva was awaiting trial on 2005 robbery charges when he was taken to the hospital for an injury.
He attacked a sheriff's deputy, stole the official's gun and fatally shot hospital security guard Derrick McFarland, who was unarmed.

Before he was captured near Virginia Tech's Blacksburg campus a day later, Morva shot Sheriff's Deputy Eric Sutphin in the back of the head.

Morva's lawyers had argued he suffered from delusional disorder, which is similar to schizophrenia, adding that his condition worsened because prison doctors had refused to treat him.

Sounds like his only delusion was that he would get away with cold blooded murder.

FR

If you kill someone and it is not justified, you should die. People who do not believe that should stay away. And in my eyes there is no mental excuse. If your meds aren't working, this will and you'll never do it again.

The biggest problem with execution is the government executing it. There is so much legal trickery in the courts it is ridiculous. You can't trust a conviction because evidence is manipulated and whatever else. Witnesses are coerced. Even "expert" testifiers are vetted to the cause. Crime labs make a ton of mistakes.

If the system was perfect, let the punishment fit the crime. Take a life, lose yours. The problem is that the system is far from perfect.

If he was: mentally ill, deficient, unstable, then your prison system is complicit and those who were involved should be put to death - seems fair.

Their legal system is an oddity

I'm not sure you should call it a split... that sounds like there was some animosity... could have been but I didn't read it in the article. I have relatives that I disagree with on some big issues but I don't love them less... in fact I respect them more. But then again my relatives are thoughtful and even in disagreement at least they have some valid points... DNA ya know...[:D]

No, mental illness should not be any excuse. Death.

Anyone who takes the life of another without good reason is not right in the head. Does that become the defense ? You like the Twinkie defense too ?

Elect me dictator and I will show you change, and you'll have more rights than you had before. But with those rights comes responsibility. For example drunk driving, perfectly legal. But if you have a fender bender it is vandalism, because you caused your state. Cause an injury assault with a deadly weapon. Cause a death, murder one. And if there is no doubt that it is your fault that means the death penalty.

Bring personal responsibility back into it. Same thing if you are high or drunk and playing with a gun and someone gets hurt. Even a table saw. Responsible for your actions. That is why we keep certain things away from kids.

Not too long ago I used to do carpentry, and I have a table saw with no guard on it at all. That makes it easier to use and able to do more things. I know respect for machines so that is the way I use it. However, for most of my projects I do the cutting outside. The neighbor has kids who sometimes would wander into our yard, so as I cut a piece of wood, before taking it into the house and mounting it, I would unplug the saw.

But I digress, and worse than you here. Far as the OP goes, how can part of the family oppose the punishment of some who killed one of them ? The only answer that makes any sense is that the decedent was an abuser and kept it very well hidden. Those abused would oppose the execution, being well rid of him.

Do you (or anyone) have any other logical explanation for this ?

Or maybe some of them are opposed to taking a human life no matter what. Well what did he do ? It is some sort of religious thing with some people. We kill. They might not get it, yet.

Now, I half hear you but insanity, and it comes in many formats, is a viable defence.

God made me do it
Fake news made me do it
I was conditioned to do it
me spunk hormones
etc

Yeah, but what vision ?

True vision - and yours is?
