Has anyone noticed that GW sounds ten times smarter after leaving office?

All the time they had that thing stuck in his ear to purpose of forcing him to giving answers his masters wanted him to give just slowed him down. He wasn't any Einstein, was never meant to be, never claimed to be.

But hearing this:

GW Bush Interview

Look at how quick he is to the question, how he immediately answers, with own thought on the matter, and eager to do so. Something we never saw while he was in office. And who could blame him, back then?

Put aside the particular answers (though I think some of them are good) or particular politics as such; just look at how sprightly he is and how quick and eager he is to engage. Again, something we never saw in his presidency.

I can just imagine Jimmy Carter and GW and Obama sitting around a table and somebody saying "We know the guys we need to shoot, right?"

If Joe Kennedy had just figured out the guys he needed to shoot (won't argue that himself being the last of it), then the world might, might, be in a better situation now.

President Bush is a good man...although I thought he made some tragic mistakes that cost the lives of thousands of our children I never doubted his sincerity and desire to do what was best, in his mind, for America. I was frustrated when he let others make decisions when he should not have delegated authority. He put too much trust in the likes of Dick Cheney. That said he is honorable, humble, and takes responsibility for his actions... I respect him.

What a difference between him and Trump.

During Bush's time at the White House I wondered if it was possible to have a more incompetent President .... Little did I realise that Trump was about to answer that question in the affirmative.

Looking back, it seems that Bush was a political genius and a visionary statesman compared to the cretin we have today.

I look at the tapes on youtube of John Kennedy and Jimmy Carter and they are both astounding in breadth of understanding and articulation and exposition of complex matters. Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were no slouches in that department either, even not being the biggest Clinton fan myself.

It's so disappointing to see what this country is capable of doing, but then vomiting up this recent orange mess.

I know Republican voters personally who are more than smart enough, but I can't figure out the proclivity of smart Republicans to vote for somebody they know is more stupid than they are.

Most smart people want to be around people at least as smart as they are and are attracted to people more smart than they are. It's part of how we get smarter, if interested in that endeavor. What I sometimes call "the Pete Townshend syndrome." Pete was no great guitar player, he was a song writer, but everybody else in the band (The Who) was better at his instrument or voice than Townshend was at his, because that was how best to convey his songs.

I know this has been gone over a lot about which voters are more smart or more stupid, etc., but I think the issue might be between those who feel threatened by people smarter than they are vs. those who are glad to be around people smarter than they are.

Massively off topic, but I don't think that's true of Keith Moon. He was very loud (which I believe was what got him the gig) and played fast but he wasn't that hot as a drummer otherwise. There's a fair few Who records where he can't get back to the beat after doing some fancy stuff, or doesn't seem to be keeping quite the same time as Entwhistle in the first place. I always find it a bit puzzling that he gets compared to John Bonham and Ginger Baker neither of whom went out of time when they started soloing, as Moon just didn't have the chops they did.

Of course it's off-topic! But it was me who lead that way in the first place.

Anyway, I don't know too many who think Moon was at the same level as Bonham or G. Baker, but he was still better overall on his rig than Townshend was, and even if mostly just playing basic chops, Townshend is still admired for his execution.

The point, in any case, is that some people recognize that assembling as good a team as possible is fundamentally better to the purpose rather than only the focus being on personal ego and nothing else. As with . . .

Not that I have to tell you this, but Trump is no Keith Moon, even as loud as he is.

Trump isn't even Dave Clark.

As for Thownshend, I think you're right that he was much better as an arranger than a guitarist: those synthesiser riffs and drones all over Who's Next still sound great now, and must have been downright shocking in 1970. Maybe he was the mod Isaac Hayes (or Joe Meek if you'd rather), and it's more flattering to lump him in with those guys than with Hendrix and Clapton?

RE Townsend; as a composer above all else. All the arranging and other stuff came out of that.

Of course in pop music things are not so completely disaggregated as that. The overall presentation and theatre matter too. Witness The Beatles hair and Lady Gaga, et al.

And yes, Pete Townshend's white jump suit and jumping off a 3' riser onto the stage in time with the chord.

That's why I was thinking of Isaac Hayes with reference to Thownshend, to be honest. (The writer who plays and arranges thing, not mid air windmills in a white suit, obvs.)
I dunno if Lady Gaga's a good example of somebody who does a complete package herself though: most of her schtick was ripped off from other people (I think the former singer out of Missing Persons has a particularly large chip on her shoulder about this) and her career seems to have taken a nose dive since she split with her manager on the big records, which suggests that some of the gimmickry her success was based on was down to him not her. (The Beatles, on the other hand, absolutely.)

DC Five not the greatest, maybe, but Mike Smith I always liked as a lead singer for that era.

I know I started the thread so I can go off the tracks as much as I like, but I still feel the need to get back to the topic somewhat, ...

Kieth Moon was still the best drummer for The Who, just as Ringo and Charlie Watts, etc. for their bands.

As for Isaac Hayes, even though most his output being from his own compositions, many consider his treatment of Burt Bacharach's "Walk On By" to be a classic, getting to your point anyway about his arrangement and production artistry.

You forgot about Gerald Ford. It was said that he could not walk and chew gum at the same time.

And I assume you are talking about GW Bush, not GHW Bush who was very competent. The problem though was that his loyalty was to the oil companies.

But at least Gerald Ford was not proactive uch, in fact he pretty much did nothing. You might not realize it from oer there, but that is what some of us want. The politicians to do nothing.

It is a well known fact that they cannot really create jobs, except for public works which comes from the taxpayers' money. They screw up almost everything they do. The last good thing they did was the interstate highway system which made transportation quite a bit easier. But in reality they did it to boost tax revenue. Too bad it inadvertently helped the People, like if I want to go from Cleveland to Orlando I don't have to drive on dirt roads. But they did it for trucks, and trucks pay big bucks to use those roads. I have known a few truck drivers and what they pay for is ridiculous.

If Trump is blocked on most of what he wants to do, fine. That wall, even if it happens or starts to happen, will have no effect. Those people have trucks and planes and boats and can swim. And there are tunnels but the drug lords won't let people use them because it is too risky. It is not only their gateway to the biggest drug market (the US) it also helps the get to Canada, and they smoke Mexican. Sure, plenty grow their own but not everyone can do that. I can't. The only thing I can grow is mold. So there is a market there for that hundred buck an ounce shit.

Someone said Trump was thinking of resigning, I do not want that. That would mean we get Pence. Right now we have an obstructionist congress and I think that is good. They know that even though he ran as a republican that he always supported democrats in the past. They are not with him, and I think that is good.

I honestly cannot think of any logical reason he even ran for President, but at least he kept Hillary Clinton the fuck out. That is the one good thing that cannot be faulted about this whole ordeal. Even if he resigns she is not in. And they are not going to impeach him. So get used to it.

I think Isaac Hayes gets a lot less props for his talents as an arranger and producer than he deserves because Barry White is basically his fault. Bit unfair (people don't blame Alice Cooper for Guns & Roses, do they?), but there it is. Slowed down overlong soul-verging-on-gospel covers of pop songs buried in strings with the vocalist delivering a lengthy monologue for five minutes before he sings a not have been rather spoiled by Barry White, however cracking Hot Buttered Soul is.

The odd thing about Thownshend is that most of what he's done outside of the Who is a lot duller and far less interesting. I think Mm's onto something with the argument that the limitations of what the Who could manage as a band, and how they worked around them were just as important to their sound as the more impressive bits.

WD: the version of Acid Queen from that with Tina Turner singing it is better still.
