A march by supporters of the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan (KKK) group in the US state of Virginia has been met by hundreds of rival demonstrators.

Dozens of KKK members took part in an authorised march to protest at the planned removal of a statue of General Robert E Lee from Charlottesville.

General Lee oversaw the pro-slavery Confederate forces in the US civil war.

The marchers, some carrying Confederate flags, were separated from rival groups by metal barricades and armed police.

The KKK supporters were escorted to and from the rally on Saturday by police.

They were greeted in the university town by large crowds chanting "shame" and "racists go home" shortly after they had gathered at Justice Park.

"Police were deployed to secure access to the park and ensure the safety of all involved," a Virginia State Police spokeswoman said.

Police declared the counter-protests "unlawful" and used tear gas to disperse the crowds. Several people were arrested, local media report.

Defending the Confederate flag and monuments that recall the era of slavery have become a rallying cause for both old and new branches of the far right in the US.

Some observers argue that US President Donald Trump's election to the White House has re-energised the far right movement across the United States.

Status: offline 		North? I cant remember the last KKK rally there. Perhaps their police death squads keep the more educated golliwogs in line - up north, as you say. Not that the illiterate police can read them their rights - perhaps thats why they just pump em full of nigger bullets - seems the logical expantion, if you are prepared to think things through

Status: offline 		The KKK of today bears very little resemblance to their original intent and purpose. They have become symbolistic, prancing around and all that. They are a joke. They actually went on the Jerry Springer show.

Originally they were after judges. This was during the "reconstruction" that cost many farmers their land. The unfair judgements made people into paupers, and actually homeless. That KKK was not going to take it laying down. Lynching Blacks came later as they were coddled by the courts. Rape my daughter and the law lets you off ? Guess what's next. They never went out and found Black people at random and hung them. This is killing and you don't take it lightly. But the situation had become intolerable. If they had an effect on society as whole, I don't know.

I would not want any association with the KKK of today. They seem like a religion or something. The National Alliance maybe, but they are gone. Once Pierce died the last White organisation died. When Strom took over he pretty much dismantled the place. But they never advocated violence. Simply White pride. Other races can have groups, so why can't we ?

If it doesn't come to violence, let them protest as much as they want. The KKK, as much as I detest the fact that they claim to represent me, is allowed to do that. The bottom line is that if we do not stand together we shall hang separately. You support my rights and I support yours.

Ever see the footage from Bohemian Grove ? See any Black people in it ? But that is a private place and they are allowed to discriminate. Just like a CBC. That stands for Congressional Black Caucus.

I wish we had a reasonable White group, but half of them are kill all the n____s or some other sort of White supremacists. What happened to us ? You know down south we helped slaves escape to the north.

What happened to us ?
