ORIGINAL: bounty44 wtf?? when the definition of "entitlement" is so broad as to include social security, medicare, and unemployment, you cannot talk about things in reference to "the poor." Hate to break it to you, but everyone of those things, have been labeled an entitlement by the GOP, including unemployment benefits. You see, the GOP lawmakers feel that if someone really wanted to work, they should go out and find a job, even if the job they used to have paid $80,000.00 plus a year or even higher, and thanks to firms sending everything from factory assembly jobs and research and development jobs overseas, even folks with advanced degrees find themselves without a job. So, for many years, the GOP has fought extending long term unemployment for educated and uneducated alike and claimed that there are jobs available, even if those jobs are minimum wage jobs that will not cover the expenses such as the half million dollar home that Joe bought while working for GM as a Research and Development engineer making 100K a year. I am still trying to figure out how social security is an entitlement when it is pulled from my paychecks, and rarely does the COLA meet the actual inflation rate... but according to the GOP it is an entitlement (probably because both parties routinely pass bills to rob the fund to cover other government expenses, which is why the fund is in trouble now.) Of course, lets face it, Social Security was designed at first to be voluntary and to provide a security blanket so that people will have a livable income upon retiring... Which it doesnt, and of course it is now mandatory
