Seems one consistently objective surveys are those done by Pew research. Admittedly, much of their surveying is in the most general sense. Yet because PR asks many of the right questions, its result do signify trends and other unknown realities.

One is on just who is poor and how one side looks (down) at the problem. Asked and you'll find many are people who are fed the media stereotypes of just who is poor. The media plays a role here to as additional research has shown.

What prompts me ? (go read the link)

.....echoes the deep partisan divide in the U.S. House of Representatives, which on Thursday produced a farm bill that did not include funding for the food stamp program. Nada...zilch.

The farm bill passed by the House on Thursday, after a day of intense and sometimes hostile debate, was stripped of about $740 billion in funding for food stamps, setting up a confrontation with the Senate which has approved a very different version of the legislation.

The legislation represented the first time since 1973 that a House version failed to provide support for food stamps.

Yet, let's look at the make up of who does and doesn't use these programs, starting with food stamps.

For example, about 18% of adults aged 18 to 29 have benefited from this entitlement program.

Compared with 8% of those 65 and older.

On programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, unemployment benefits and food stamps.....

The survey found that significant proportions of Democrats (60%) and Republicans (52%) say they have benefited from a major entitlement program at some point in their lives.

So have nearly equal shares of self-identifying conservatives (57%), liberals (53%) and moderates (53%).

While politically, congressional Republicans have focused on reducing spending on (certain) federal entitlement programs, the Pew Research survey found the U.S. to be “a “bipartisan nation of beneficiaries.”

wtf??

when the definition of "entitlement" is so broad as to include social security, medicare, and unemployment, you cannot talk about things in reference to "the poor."

entitlement has always been that broad. it has to do with the meaning of the word.

That's because when we didn't have them, we had a large poverty problem.

They are our solution. Not perfect . . . but the best we have so far.

supplying the simple dictionary definition of a word does not suffice in ascertaining whether or not it is being used correctly in a political context.

that aside, the issue it not with the definition of the word. the issue is the use of the word "poor" in reference to it.

people get social security, medicare and unemployment benefits REGARDLESS of socio-economic status.

Please review the post numbered 4, and the post numbered 5.

it is used correctly in a political context, it is the definition of the word.

well, there are people on social security who are poor, but be that as it may, it seems that what the original statements gravamen was food stamps.

And that will strike at the food stamp capital of the world, the very red southern Owsley, KY as well as several other red areas.

I personally know 'republicans' on food stamps, and other 'poor' entitlement programs, as you point out my county is at least 75% 'republican'.

I do not see a fault here, there are 'republicans' who have made use of all these entitlements, whether poor or rich.

Because people from all economic strata retire, need health care, and a bridge in times of unemployment.

That's why two of those, social security and unemployment, are geared toward earned income.

But it's not hard to understand why those programs would be of greater relief to the poor.

That reminds me of a conversation I had with one of those Campus Snowflakes who advocated exclusive "Safe Spaces".
I mentioned that it seemed strange to decry sexism and racism by behaving in an overtly sexist and racist manner.
I was informed in no uncertain terms that the dictionary definitions of these words was WRONG.

Medicaid, welfare, unemployment benefits and food stamps.....

Of these, there is the stereotype that all users are poor but dominated by those who according to some are...takers rather than makers. Recipients are those that get on these programs and stay on them because they don't want to work and wish to remain poor.

Not far from there and that widely held position is the further stereotype of them not only poor but also being black, hispanic, unwed mothers black and hispanic for them too.

Whereas the numbers tell us that the beneficiaries of these and entitlements is a very bipartisan affair.

In the debate that often follows just like here, too much freedom is taken in cherry picking which you discuss as when come election time...they are not. They are all entitlements...at least social entitlements.

Now Business entitlements it seems is left off their list of questions. Yet another stereotype as 'entitlements' only going to the poor. Yet while many complain of those that shouldn't qualify for these...business 'entitlements' aren't really the same but a 'partnership' between govt. and the business community.

So there are no stereotypes resulting in demeaning attributes or of the recipients of any business entitlements. Why ?

What has happened is a successful manufacturing of dissent of programs (entitlements) for the poor and a manufacturing of consent to programs (entitlements) for the richer business community.

Hate to break it to you, but everyone of those things, have been labeled an entitlement by the GOP, including unemployment benefits.

You see, the GOP lawmakers feel that if someone really wanted to work, they should go out and find a job, even if the job they used to have paid $80,000.00 plus a year or even higher, and thanks to firms sending everything from factory assembly jobs and research and development jobs overseas, even folks with advanced degrees find themselves without a job.

So, for many years, the GOP has fought extending long term unemployment for educated and uneducated alike and claimed that there are jobs available, even if those jobs are minimum wage jobs that will not cover the expenses such as the half million dollar home that Joe bought while working for GM as a Research and Development engineer making 100K a year.

I am still trying to figure out how social security is an entitlement when it is pulled from my paychecks, and rarely does the COLA meet the actual inflation rate... but according to the GOP it is an entitlement (probably because both parties routinely pass bills to rob the fund to cover other government expenses, which is why the fund is in trouble now.)

Of course, lets face it, Social Security was designed at first to be voluntary and to provide a security blanket so that people will have a livable income upon retiring...

Which it doesnt, and of course it is now mandatory

Does that not count?
