There is really only one viable way out of the current impasse. That is a universal free at the point of service healthcare scheme administered by the Fed Govt, as exists in virtually every other advanced democracy. This acts as a very effective brake on rising costs, as the State negotiates on behalf of all healthcare consumers, rather than powerless healthcare consumers taking their chances in a market place stacked by vested interests. IOW, a universal healthcare system reverses the sellers market in healthcare into a consumers market, forcing the healthcare providers to genuinely compete for the healthcare $. The potential savings are enormous - most other advanced democracies only pay about 50 cents for every dollar the US spends on healthcare. For instance, Australia's Medicare system is financed by a 1.5% levy on incomes, which on an average income of c$AUD80K works out at cAUD$1,600 annually. Do the math ... It's only a matter of time before the USA catches up with the rest of the world and introduces a universal free at the point of service healthcare scheme. Better to bite the bullet now, get it done with for once and for all, and replace the current uncertainty and chaos with an orderly universal healthcare scheme. If the Democrats propose a scheme like this, it will be a huge hit with the electorate if designed and promoted properly.
