ExxonMobil must pay a $2m penalty (note the paltry feeble fine too-think it through) for signing documents for oil and gas projects in Russia, despite US sanctions imposed after Russian forces seized Crimea in 2014.

Exxon signed documents in May 2014 with Igor Sechin, the president of Russian oil giant Rosneft and another, unnamed person, it said.

At the time, Exxon was led by TRex Tillerson, now US Secretary of State.

The US Treasury Department said Exxon showed "reckless disregard" for rules.
Exxon has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Exxon again - really! And headed up, then, by T-Rex Tillerson too guffaws a formidable combination isnt it just ask your now defunct EPA and I am truly are coming across to the USA to shit in your rivers - which I am led to believe is now legal.

Another myth is that there are Russian troops in Ukraine. While that may be true, they were not sent there by the Russian government. Fact is that on the east side of Ukraine there are alot of people of Russia descent who do not like the new government and thus are rebels. Most are actually citizens. Most Ukrainians in the west are pro Europe, US and whatever, the west so to speak.

You mistitled this thread. The current Ukrainian government is pro US. The sanctions are on Russia. The deal was made with Russia.

A company like Exxonmobile laughs at a two million dollar fine. Russia laughs at US sanctions. In fact if these sanctions have the effect of depressing the value of the ruble, they are good for Russia. They are a net exporter and when their currency goes down they get more of it per unit of whatever. Eventually the market must correct itself, which brings back the value of the ruble but now they got more of them. Unnastan ? Now you take a net importer (of everything good at least) like the US, dropping the value of its currency can be crushing.

A time will come when the US government finally realizes that it does not rule the whole world. Hopefully, before it makes enemies out of everyone. And this shit did not start with Trump. He might not be doing anything to fix it, but he didn't start it.

They are trying to do in Europe and Asia what they tried to do in South America. Read "War Is A Racket" by Smedley Butler.

Anyway, I guess we can call this news. News of another corporation just doing whatever it wants. But it is not the second coming or anything. Corporations in this country have the lawyers sit down with the bean counters and figure out if something is worth doing by what they will make doing it versus what it will cost them if they get caught.

Exxon must have smelled money or they would not have done it, but I don't see how. What would they need from Russia ? Sure, Russia has gas and oil, but what is really more important is they got a good piece of the European market for it. They are not going to give that up no matter what. It would probably take an expert in that business to tell you, which I am not. Anyone here savvy enough to tell why they would even seek a deal with the Russians ?
