Crime in England and Wales has seen its largest annual rise in a decade, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The total number of crimes reported to and recorded by the police rose by 10% between April 2016 and March 2017 to almost five million.

Violent crime was up by 18%, robbery by 16% and sex offences by 14%.

The figures come as Home Office data shows the number of police officers is the lowest since 1985.
A report said there were 123,142 officers across all ranks in England and Wales at the end of March this year.

Despite the rise in crime recorded by police, the Crime Survey of England and Wales, based on people's experiences of crime, showed a 7% drop.

The Crime Survey is always published on the same day as the ONS figures.

Its results are based on a face-to-face survey of 38,000 adults and children in which they are asked about their experiences of crime in the previous year.

The method means it includes crimes that are never reported to the police.
'High harm offences'

In the ONS statistics, nearly five million crimes were recorded by the police in the last year - 458,021 more than the previous year.

The number of offences of violence against a person went up 18% to 175,060 offences.

Theft was up 7%, with 118,774 crimes recorded, and public order offences rose 39% to 78,697.

There were 723 homicides in the past year - made up of murders, manslaughter and infanticide cases.
The figure included the 96 Hillsborough deaths for the first time, following the inquest verdict in April 2016 that the victims had been unlawfully killed 27 years earlier.

Even without this number, there was still a 9% rise in homicide.

There was also a 23% increase in firearms offences - equalling a further 1,200 crimes - and a 20% increase in knife crime - meaning 5,800 more offences.

Status: offline 		That said, I have to say it worries the fuck out of me after so many years of falling crime. Let's see if it's a trend that continues next year.

I can't help but get the feeling that it is a sign of the breakdown in community respect, against a background of falling real wages, austerity and the demonisation of minorities.

And the government are pissing around with making a meal of the Brexit negotiations while the country burns.

Old Theresa is sure turning out to be a steady hand on the tiller, isn't she.

I could possibly put him in a room with 50 people from different parts of England alone and they would all speak differently. And I think it's called Blackpool pleasure beach to distinguish it from the rest of the sea front, which can look a little grim when it's busy.
(The reference to Blakpool was a serious comment rather than a cheap dig, btw: Blackpool seems to be popular with west coast Scots because it's a lot closer than Wales of the west country so you can actually take a day trip there from Glasgow and Ayrshire.)

Status: offline 		longwayhome I don't understand some Scottish accents either - I have said that before ;) And i don't understand a word of Robbie Burns - I remember sitting in primary school and wondering what language is this fuking gibberish written in.

Still, when I used to go to that god forsaken land south of the Wall I understood about half of them from 12 regions, and half of them Understood me - probably a blessing really.

Blackpool was okay but a bit benign - you kinda get there and think fuk is this it!

is it still popular with the jocks whoremods - they dont allow me out of the asylum no more :( - Anyway don't the Scottish men go down there to get pissed and knock up the English bints?

Status: offline 		What I meant by "no English accent" was that I don't have one because I'm not English.

There are many other accents that people who have grown up on these islands have. I just don't make a big thing about it because there are enough things which divide us already. I've lived and worked in many parts of the UK and have no particularly negative feelings about any national or cultural group.

In short there are decent people and knobs everywhere if you look. I do my best to concentrate on the former and avoid the latter.

My point is whoremods knows fine well I cant work out which side of the border he resides and have always wondered - I keep threatening to pay more attention but lets be franks that's not happening.

I hear acid attacks are all the rage in England London nowadays

Gun deaths & Gun crime are relatively rare here as is death by crime, and certainly when you compare it to eg America. Dunno about Singapore?

When you foster divide, preach divide it is inevitable crime rates will go up/spike. You have actually inferred the divide adage in your reply.

I have no issue in saying America is divided to the point of no repair. UK is a fair bit better, but by no means great and erring toward the US model, and England is worse than Scotland for that - and in no way do I imply Scotland is great either... I dont know enough about Wales or Ireland(s)

And anyway is someone going to buy me a stick of stripey rock and not that pink shit?

Our crimes are low because there is no mercy to criminals. Generally even foreigners who come to Singapore are terrified of our law. And they are more well behaved here. It's the feeling of if you so much as drop an ash from your cigarette or spit, a police would jump out of the bush and arrest you. Which is kinda true. Many undercover cops everywhere. They aren't in uniforms when they are patrolling. They just blend in, which I think should be the way, as if people see cops, they would have like head start or notice.

I was at a pub and two dumb caucasian male drop their pants and had a wanking competition. And plain clothes officers appeared and cuffed them out of no where. They probably got deported.

My brother actually got in trouble for throwing his cigarette bud into a drain. Plain clothes officer too. $350 fine on the spot.

I don't believe crimes goes up if you call out a certain group of people for something. I would say, it lowers crimes because the authorities are saying, "We are watching you closely. Don't fuck up!"

We did have believe it or not, have a South American gang syndicate who flew all the way into Singapore back and forth just to rob homes here, the big houses. But they got caught.

Bit out of context that one really Greta.

The crime rate, including the murder rate, in the UK is low compared to the US and most other compatible countries. We have enjoyed many years of falling crime, despite fluctuating immigration rates, so no-one here is thinking about a link between crime and immigrants. Whatever you are implying there is no statistical link between immigration and crime rates at any point in the last 100 years.

Being concerned about a rise in crime rates, after for example a reduction in murder numbers of 40% over ten years despite a rising population, is only natural.

Our model of policing, relative community tolerance and stable or rising household incomes has worked for a number of years to foster a reduction in crime rates, which we all appreciate whatever side of the political debate we are on. However we now have a society less at ease with itself and falling household incomes.

Guns are nothing to do with any of this. Our crime rate is still well below societies with high levels of gun ownership.
