"NFL Player on 'Why He Stands'"

quote:

Cincinnati Bengal Tyler Eifert respectfully disagrees with former San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel during the playing of the national anthem. In a thoughtful piece for Medium, the Bengals’s tight end begins by noting he jumped into this debate against his better judgment.

Then, he offered a simple, yet profound explanation for why he honors the anthem.

“I stand because I love my country.”

Eifert has other reasons, one being that some of his family members have proudly served in our armed forces.

As I stand for the national anthem, I don’t want there to be questions of why I am standing or if I will kneel. I want there to be a clear understanding of why I stand. I want there to be a clear understanding of why I respect our flag and why I love our country.

It's "sad" to see how divided we are even over a common practice of standing for the flag, he writes.

Kaepernick started kneeling last summer when he told the press he can’t respect the flag while law enforcement were supposedly targeting minorities. Several fellow players joined his protest.

In a moving gesture, Eifert explains that he will be honoring a military person by writing their name on his cleats for every game this season.

A bit more respectful than Kaepernick’s police pig socks don’t you think?

Eifert is also asking for support for the the K9s For Warriors charity to raise awareness about post traumatic stress disorder.

If more players behaved like Eifert, perhaps the NFL's ratings would fare better.

What's truly telling about that article is that I read pretty far into the comments made on it and didn't find one commenter who disagreed with Trump on the issue.

The president's full comment:

"Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a b***h off the field right now - he's fired!'"

"Get that son of a bitch off the field"- black man protesting racial injustice

It is so telling that you get battier than bat shit angry over a silent protest. (freedom of expression)
But condone violence.

It's not that people object to Kaepernick voicing his opinion, that IS well within his rights as a citizen, no one is arguing against that.
The problem is that he chose to do so in an inappropriate venue. Football should not be politicized. Much in the same manner that actors who choose to use their acceptance speech at the Oscars or Emmys should leave it to a more appropriate time and place.
Kaepernick may have been making a point, but in doing so he was hurting football. Ever since he chose to politicize the game, whether for valid reasons or not, the ratings, attendance, and profits for the NFL have dropped significantly. The very game paying him millions of dollars has been harmed directly by his actions. There's no mystery as to why he hasn't been hired. If he was the best player in the league, (and he isn't even close) he would still be unemployed by the NFL as he has cost them more than he will ever be worth. It's not a message, it's economics.

Lucylastic -> RE: Doug Baldwin: NFL is sending a message over Kaepernick (9/23/2017 9:13:05 AM)

yet the country is ruled by a tv star...please spare me the "football is sacred bs.

And before that it was led by a junior senator/neighborhood activist. So? The person in the Oval Office has no bearing on this issue.
No one can reasonably expect to remain employed when their choices/actions economically harm their employer.

MercTech -> RE: Doug Baldwin: NFL is sending a message over Kaepernick (9/23/2017 4:47:24 PM)

Meh, Trump asked a question of his audience that implied a certain stance. One way to test the water of audience opinion.

The NFL owners probably don't give a damn for Kapernick but do give a damn about the calls for boycotting games Kapernick played in. Organizations like the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars still have a little bit of political cred.

Your mind reading classes were a scam

Anyone can express themselves all they want, so long as they're ready to deal with the consequences (just like with anything else)

Kapaernick has every right to protest whenever, however, or wherever he chooses. He also has the responsibility to accept whatever comes from that protest. If an NFL owner doesn't want him on his team, that's the owner's choice.

I have a friend on Facebook (which is the only reason we're connected) that has, once again, refused to watch the NFL because of protests have been allowed by his team by one or member of the team (Malcolm Jenkins of the Philadelphia Eagles). As a former Navy serviceman, he is offended by the protests.

Dr. Ben & Candy Carson (Facebook post):

quote:

Here we are at another NFL Sunday. That used to represent a time of fun, games and unity. I hope we can return to that situation soon. One of the reasons we play the national anthem before the game is to remind us that even though we're rooting for different sports teams, we are united as a country. That is a wonderful message that we should not allow to be distorted by anyone.

Of course we all have the right to express ourselves, but as the Bible says, there is a time and place for everything. Last week I saw a story about pre-adolescent players being drawn into the "take a knee" protests. Does anyone honestly believe that encouraging even our youth to believe they are victims of our society will actually help us come together?
I think many athletes actually think they are making things better. We would encourage them and all Americans to utilize their influence to truly draw people together and not be manipulated into doing the opposite under the guise of unity.

You (as in country) are not commonly referred to as the Dis-United States of America for nothing anymore, you don't have a hope of ever 'coming together' again.

You even attack each other and throw blame over attacks that once used to unite you, this an other forums provide amp,e evidence of that.

Until both sides learn to work together and form compromises despite disagreements, you're finished other than to showcase to world as a living example of 'what not to become.'

Steelers plan to skip anthem; Ravens, Jaguars protest President Trump’s comments by linking arms, kneeling
Across the country, players decide what they will do before kickoff. And Colin Kaepernick isn't even playing.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/sports/wp/2017/09/24/nfl-week-3-president-trump-urges-boycott-over-player-protests-injury-updates-scores-fantasy-football-tips/?undefined=&utm_term=.193256f2ccf5&wpisrc=nl_most&wpmm=1

At the start of Sunday’s first NFL game, members of the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars sent a powerful message as the majority stood linking arms, while a number of others took a knee in response to President Trump’s tweet urging fans to boycott the sport until owners “fire or suspend” players who protest during the national anthem.

The protests only intensified ahead of the 1 p.m. games, with Pittsburgh Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin telling CBS that the team would remain in the locker room rather than take the field.

Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll declined to say what his players might do, but said in a CBS interview that he hopes that this will be the day that attitudes in America begin to change, expending on a comment Saturday in which he had said: “We stand for love and justice and civility. We stand for our players and their constitutional rights, just as we stand for equality for all people.”

Ravens Coach John Harbaugh joined his players, linking arms, and Ravens Hall of Famer Ray Lewis took a knee. Jaguars owner Shahid Khan locked arms with his players and the Jaguars’ coaches. Khan, who donated to Trump’s inaugural committee, is believed to be the second owner to participate in events related to anthem protests. Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam stood on field and locked arms with players, military personnel and first responders in Week 1 of the 2017 season.

One Ravens player stood alone, but seemed to be in prayer. All players appeared to stand for the playing of the British anthem, “God Save the Queen.”

being that youre the first person ive ever heard/read use that expression, im pretty skeptical of it being "common."

by all means, bring forth the evidence.

and maybe look up the word "common" before you try?
