Why don't they just pass a bill that allows health insurance to be bought across state lines? That's it. Nothing else.

mnottertail -> RE: Why don't they? (8/7/2017 10:37:56 AM)

what good does that do? I have owned State Farm car insurance which operates across state lines, and I have owned it in MN, NY, CA, and MA, and it was a different price in every case, its based on the locale and costs and incidents there.

The same with Health Insurance, wouldnt change a thing, except you would be fucking with absolutely claimed states rights.

Musicmystery -> RE: Why don't they? (8/7/2017 10:39:13 AM)

Many reasons why not, starting with circumvention of state laws.

Some states have low rates because their insurance sucks. Selling this in states that better regulate insurance is not a good idea.

Well to the capitalist you speak heresy. There is an instinctive apprehension in all corp. offices forever disdainful of competition.

Competition is the last thing [they] want.

Whatever we do, let's not do it like say...Germany.

HERE

Because that would be a step towards solving the problem, and that would never do.
(MM's onto something with the talk of monopolies as well: God forbid a bunch of shyster rip-off merchants should have to compete with somebody in the next state who actually provide the service that they're claiming to cheaper.)

Why not? People will eventually figure out the cheap insurance is garbage and move on to better plans... or they'll stay on the cheap plan because it fits their needs.

FR,

What do you think would happen if the Federal Government offered catastrophic care coverage for every US Citizen? Catastrophic care coverage is, usually, much cheaper, premium-wise, so the Feds pick up the tab after a specified $$ level.

Or they'll figure it out after they have a devastating health event.

It's why we have laws protecting citizens. Like licensing professionals.

And why we don't tell kids, "OK, but if you fall off that rock and break your leg, don't come running to me."

Well if the cheapest plan was some type of catestrophic plan, the worse thing that could happen is the individual would end up owing the deductible.

Isn't licensing professionals to give some sort of backing that the person is what he claims to be? And, it's also another way for Big Gov to make a buck or two.

That would be pretty stupid. Running to someone after you break a leg could make it much worse! [8D]

Oh that's easy.
1. Because it won't change anything worth changing
2. It will allow the federal government to interfere in all sorts of unwanted ways (interstate commerce clause - the whore of Constitutional clauses)
3. There is no point, other than to please idiots.

How exactly would that solve anything?

BTW, insurance companies are exempt from antitrust laws. They made a deal IIRC 1945 federal act and in return, they couldn't boycott.

The cheapest plans were the ones where you found out you weren't covered for it and had your insurance cancelled just when you needed it.

mnottertail -> RE: Why don't they? (8/8/2017 6:01:38 AM)

Rather than torturously coming up with bright ideas to support the parasite insurance industries, why dont they go single payer national?

Musicmystery -> RE: Why don't they? (8/8/2017 6:02:26 AM)

Wow. Someone should think of that and run on it.

The answer is...

Insurance companies are only part of the equation. The other parts are providers and big pharma.

Whether a plan is public or private, it needs a better funding model, than fee-for-service.

WickedsDesire -> RE: Why don't they? (8/8/2017 7:21:50 AM)

Too many people wanting a piece of the pie :( USA spends more of its GDP on healthcare than any other nation, by a mile.

A i say, from time to time, Insurance companies top 10ish make 10 billion pa
Big pharma 100billion pa - this doesn't include all the dosh they farm (manipulate) out for RD, to their subsidiaries etc

Was/is there another vote? - I seem to have forgotten/lost track - news is relatively boring when Comrade Bone Spurs is shacked up in one of his shanty towns.

German model is good MrRodgers - your point I presume.
