Thats right folks, the USS Indianapolis, the ship that carried the bomb dropped on Hiroshima has been found in 18000 feet of water in the Philippine sea.

I've always been horrified by the story of the crew. Imagine taking your turn over the side of a raft where two thirds of the initial survivors were eaten by sharks. I never understood the point of a heavy cruiser. What is the necessary niche between battleship and cruiser?

Cruisers were faster than battleships, but had guns nearly as large, though less if them. The speed advantage they had is why most aircraft carriers in that era were built on cruiser hulls.

No one who has ever seen the first "Jaws" could not wonder about the Indianapolis.
I'm pleased it has been found, just hope the scavengers leave it be.

The 'cruiser' is a bit of a misnomer.

The standard WW2 cruiser mounted 6 inch navel rifles, was fast (basically a really large destroyer) with the primary purpose being scouting and escort duties.

A light cruiser packed the same standard guns, and was lighter in armor, and faster for scouting.

The heavy cruiser was carried 8 inch naval rifles, heavier armor and was essentially a heavy escort.

Add to that mix the AA cruiser with an increased number of anti aircraft guns.

Now the British held onto the "battle cruiser" class which was essentially a battleship with light armor and really big guns and depended on speed and the big guns to keep her out of trouble (google HMS Hood to see just how well that worked.)

The battleships were big, slow and had big guns. Prior to WW2 and after the adoption of the Aircraft carrier, old battleships were too slow to keep up with the carriers, so the US navy went into building fast battleships under the misguided theory that battleships were still going to be the queens of the seas.

Now, in the modern navy, the vessels called cruisers are little more than big destroyers and not nearly as big as their predecessors, which is kind of insulting to the old ladies that came before them.

However, specific to the Indie, there is a few things most people do not know.

1) Her mission was so secret no one even knew she was missing for almost a week.
2) Due to the secrecy of her mission, she did not have the standard 2 or 3 destroyers as escorts
3) Captain McVeigh was told that "the threat of Japanese submarines in her area was minimal" and officially instructed to not follow standard asw routine, which meant she was not holding a zig zag course.

Captain McVeigh was held negligent in the sinking of the Indie because she was not using a zig zag procedure, even though the commander of the Japanese submarine that sank her told the court of inquiry that it would not have mattered.

He was in the process of checking the area through his periscope prior to surfacing to charge batteries when he spotted the Indie at the minimum range for firing his torpedoes.

In other words, the Indie was about 600 yards out when he fired. So the torpedoes made the minimum run required to arm, and a second later the slammed into the Indie.

He basically popped up his scope, saw a juicy target and fired without having to stalk or run a plot.

From first sighting to firing his fish, he estimated the time elapsed was about four minutes.

Look at it this way, you are deer hunting, you need to take a piss, you find a bush, step behind it and find a deer 20 feet away with no clue you are even in the freaking county.

A perfect cant miss situation (unless you are my old high school friend who shot his dad's $12000 prize breeding bull when aiming at a coke can.)

A side note, that friend enlisted in the army and became a forward artillery observer, and when you consider the bull incident, he is NOT he guy you want calling arty in to support you.

Well, since they found the Indie, I think the next big one should be....

Someone track down the 'Flying Dutchman' and tell that captain to make port already and quit fucking with people.

I understand cruisers, not heavy cruisers. However, jif has the explanation above.

Since Blackbeard's ship has already been located I'd concur that locating the Flying Dutchman should be concentrated on next.

You can't tell the Dutch anything, sadly.

They were to protect the battleship in any way possible. Now they protect carriers.

You understand that the Dutchman is a ghost ship who's captain is cursed to sail the seas and bring bad luck to whoever is unlucky enough to spot her?

Hell, I threw a party when they found the USS Wahoo.

As far as US navy vessels I would like to see found, the USS Trigger, aka "The Galloping Ghost of the Japanese Coast" tops my list.

I'm the galloping ghost of the Japanese coast.
You don't hear of me and my crew
But just ask any man off the coast of Japan.
If he knows of the Trigger Maru.

I look sleek and slender alongside my tender.
With others like me at my side,
But we'll tell you a story of battle and glory,
As enemy waters we ride.

I've been stuck on a rock, felt the depth charge's shock,
Been north to a place called Attu,
and I've sunk me two freighters atop the equator
Hot work, but the sea was cold blue.

I've cruised close inshore and carried the war
to the Empire Island Honshu,
While they wire Yokahama I could see Fujiyama,
So I stayed, to admire the view.

When we rigged to run silently, deeply I dived,
And within me the heat was terrific.
My men pouring sweat, silent and yet
Cursed me and the whole damned Pacific.

Then destroyers came sounding and depth charges pounding
My submarine crew took the test.
Far in that far off land there are no friends on hand,
To answer a call of distress.

I was blasted and shaken (some damage I be taken),
my hull bleeds and pipe lines do, too
I've come in from out there for machinery repair,
And a rest for me and my crew.

I got by on cool nerve and in silence I served,
Though I took some hard knocks in return,
One propeller shaft sprung and my battery's done,
But the enemy ships I saw burn.

I'm the galloping ghost of the Japanese coast,
You don't hear of me and my crew.
But just ask any man off the coast of Japan,
If he knows of the Trigger Maru.

Funny thing, I was airborne infantry in the military, but I have some strange fascination for the submarines of WW2. I have toured the few that remain unchanged from those days, they are cramped, confining, and induce major claustrophobia in me, but I cant leave anything about them alone. My library has more books about the submarine service during WW2 than any other subject (including the civil war.)

I have three 1/72nd scale models of the submarine classes built during that war, the Gato, Balao and Tench classes, made to follow the standard 'unapproved crew modifications' that were adopted on each class.

That's the one. I think the flying Dutchman might even be the Captain rather than his ship, but I can't be arsed to spend half an hour sifting through a pile of books about folklore, Forteana, ghost sightings and suchlike to check.

Is the Trigger the submarine that sank the Yamamato? Definitely belongs in a museum if so.

Believe it or not, most people are completely ignorant of the Dutchman (unless it pertains to the Pirates of the Caribbean) so my question was meant without insult.

Of course, I also find it troubling that "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is no longer part of Lit classes in the local high schools, for that matter neither is Beowulf.

Even today, there are sightings of VanDervoeken's ship during storms rounding Cape Horn. Or, at least, old SudAmerican sailors will regale you in detail on it while you buy the beer. <grin>
The cultural meme still lives in some quarters. I remember the CO reading "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" over the 1MC as we passed Tierra del Fuego.

Beowulf, to be fair, is in Anglo-Saxon rather than English, though there are some rather fine translations.

Davie Jones was the captain of the Flying Dutchman. Honus Wagner was the baseball player nicknamed The Flying Dutchman. Bounty is correct and humorous in his response.

Thank you for putting that down! I kept thinking of baseball for some reason while reading from the Dutchman point on, even though I knew the Flying Dutchman was a ship.
