Hurricane Irma has become a cat 5 and has yet to hit the leeward islands. Its current projected track carries it over the keys and then up the west coast of florida. She could easily make Harvey look like a spring rain. Friends of mine on the keys are already boarding up and plan to head out by Friday, and a ex boss who moved his charter fishing service to the US Virgin islands took his five boats out yesterday heading for Georgia.

I noticed that early this morning and thought that if I lived anywhere in the Keys I'd be getting out today. That highway that runs through the Keys is only two lanes and will gridlock very easily if everyone waits to leave.. Also I-75 and I-95, the main routes out once you reach Miami, will likely also be gridlocked if people wait. If Irma remains Cat 5 and has a big storm surge, it's important to keep in mind that the highest point of land in South Florida is less than 10' above sea level. A strong surge could go completely across the state with little resistance. Irma has the potential to be a lot worse than Harvey has just been. Winds are already 185 mph.

I'm glad I am in Wisconsin. Some pretty good snow totals here and there and it gets cold. Don't have to worry about hurricanes though.

I have friends who live in Wisconsin who complain about the cold and snow, I told them I would work on a plan to switch Wisconsin with Georgia, since my friends in Georgia complain about the heat and humidity.....

Miami Dade county have begun recommending people begin to evacuate as early as tomorrow, and my friends on the Keys can forget friday: quote: Officials in Monroe County — home of the Florida Keys, a popular tourist destination — said Tuesday they had issued a mandatory evacuation for tourists beginning on Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. A mandatory evacuation for residents was also issued for Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. The county has about 80,000 residents and regularly draws throngs of visitors who travel to the Keys, a series of islands off of South Florida and connected to the rest of the state by U.S. 1. All the lobster boats, fishing and shrimp trawlers are putting out today, and since the only safe ports seem to be on the east coast of Florida, they are heading that way.

When I lived in that area almost 40 years ago you couldn't touch a beachfront home of any kind for less than $1mil. Even Intercoastal properties were up in that range. Any of Trump's neighbors in the area would have to be millionaires just to live there. All of them could afford to lose a house or two and rebuild. But I bet that if there is property damage in the area all of them will be signing up for Federal aid. Singling out Trump for that is pretty petty.

One summer (I think it was '95) when I lived in Miami, I didn't take the hurricane shutters off the house for 3 months because there was a regular conveyer belt of the fuckers coming off the Cape Verde Islands.
