Okay, I get it, Harvey was devastating.

However, there has been an ongoing problem in the western US this year that seems to have been missed by the national news media, well there have been 3 national media outlets that covered it briefly.

I am of course referring to the wildfires raging currently.

The media will report on that more when Sean Penn loses another home.

There is nothing political or religious about the wild fires that have been occurring since the dawn of time. Unless you mean to politicize them?

Not to necessarily politicize the fires, but their severity in recent years is a direct byproduct of forestry mismanagement for decades.

The biggest fire in the History of LA I read on the BBC the other day.

Los Angeles wildfires: City battles 'largest fire in history'Los Angeles wildfires: City battles 'largest fire in history'
Hundreds of Los Angeles residents have been allowed to return home, as the largest wildfires in the city's history appear to be easing.
The fires, covering about 5,000 acres, started in La Tuna Canyon on Friday, triggering a state of emergency.
"We've turned the corner, but this is not over," Mayor Eric Garcetti said on Sunday as he warned of "strong" winds.
At least three homes have been destroyed and four people are reported to have been injured.

But to be fair it seems to pale into insignificance when placed with Hurricane Harvey.

And the redirection of water resources over the last century or so probably hasn't helped much either, come to that.

My Fella used to be a forestry fire fighter, and it rankles him endlessly not to be out there fighting the fires. I, on the other hand am glad my man is not risking his life on a daily basis anymore.

A couple of years ago the same thing happened in my part of the country. For a month wild fires raged
in Tenn while the press ignored it for relatively minor stories. Like this it only got mentioned when "something important" was threatened.
This isn't politicizing the fire it it pointing out that some of us just don't count with the press.

I heard about the TN fires because my sister lives there and there were numerous stories about it on my Facebook feed.

They are having a lot of problems with fires in the east, wasnt he out there before?>? or am I mistaking him for another "hero" and Im not making light of that, fire fighters have a special place in my heart.

The press ignored the fires in TN until they threatened Dollywood. Then they were big news all of a sudden.

Even when things do make the news, there's seldom any substance - mostly video and regurgitated headlines.

There hasn't been a lot of substance in the news since the Walter Cronkite days.

He has been everywhere. He has fought wildfires in throughout Canada and the U.S.
quote:

fire fighters have a special place in my heart.

Oh me too. I was saved from a car wreck by firemen when I was a child, and have adored them ever since. They are the true heroes of out modern world, not the cops or soldiers. They risk and give their lives purely out of a desire to help people (not laws or governments) in moments of disaster.

Think about it, when you call 911 with a medical emergency, usually it is the firemen who show up first (at least it was in Toronto). When your house is on fire, they are the ones who go into the inferno to try get you (or even your pets) out. When some deer gets it's head stuck in a fence, it is firemen who show up to deal with it. When some kid goes missing in a river, it is the firemen who show up to search the river or fire department divers who search for the body.

I adore firemen, my Fella is one (forestry, and currently in the local volunteer corps) and our most recent boyfriend was one (urban). My ex husband was one. Besides being extricated from the car, I have been saved twice more by firemen when I overdosed (once accidental, once on purpose after my daughter died). They are simply the most selfless and beautiful people ever. Their whole purpose in life is to help others, regardless of the cost to themselves.

To my mind there is no more noble person on earth than one who will willingly enter a burning building to try save somebody they do not, and never will, know.

And that is why I am happily and proudly a hose bunny.

Not that I recall.

They finally said something ,as pointed out earlier, when it threatened Dollywood, At that time I found
out how long it had been because a couple of people they talked to complain about the fact that it seemed like a big secret till
then.

Well before those fires got close to Dollywood the FAA was putting out Notices To Airmen (NOTAMs) about widespread areas of obscuration and low visibility due to smoke in the area. Fires have to burn for a while to affect visibility over large areas.

Are you surprised that that is how it is in the U.S.? Come on man, the fires near the L.A. hills/canyons get tons of coverage, the hundreds of other fires throughout California do not. The media and people of the U.S are obsessed with celebrities.

Not surprised at all. I have very little respect for the current media. They are all about entertainment and not hard news.
Ten years ago Sean Penn lost a trailer in a Malibu fire and the media acted like it was the worst tragedy since the Hindenburg.
