Florida sheriff's office warns people not to shoot at Hurricane Irma
By the time Hurricane Irma started to cross the Keys, more than 54,000 people had signed up for the Facebook event Shoot at Hurricane Irma.

"Let's show Irma that we shoot first," says the description of the event. Florida is a Stand Your Ground state, after all.

"Over 99% of the people out there have common sense and are listening, but we in law enforcement deal with the 1%, so we are trying to get the message to them," explained Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco.

Clearly, it's irony and sarcasm. And yet . . .

More than 43,000 people have signed up to shoot at Hurricane Irma.

"A combination of stress and boredom made me start the event," explains Ryon Edwards, who created it on Facebook.

"The response is a complete and total surprise to me.

"I never envisioned this event becoming some kind of crazy idea larger than myself. It has become something a little out of my control."

I'd like to think people are smarter than this, so no worries.

And yet . . .

16-year-old surfer killed riding wave during Hurricane Irma in Barbados

After all, this is America. Never in our history have we ever called US citizens, in policy or in song, "The Land of the Smart."

While, yes, standing out in hurricane force winds may not be the smartest thing to do, I must also point out that it would, by sheer luck, thin the terminally stupid from the American genetic pool.

So, this IS a good thing.

As for the surfer in Barbados, having spent some significant part of my life enjoying the sport, and knowing the addiction of a surfer for extreme waves, it is quite understandable that one would attempt it.

I must point out that it is the same insane behavior exhibited in base jumping or climbing a vertical rock face without ropes.

I will also point out that there were more than a few surfers in Hawaii that were arrested during the last tsunami warning who were attempting to reach the beach to ride the ultimate wave, which turned out to be less than 3 feet, so not so ultimate.

It is also the same mentality that is exhibited when a 165 pound person climbs up on 2500 pound or bigger bull to ride for 8 seconds.

I am also quite certain that at some point in your life, you too attempted to do something others considered insanely stupid, for me I jumped out of perfectly good aircraft, rode bulls, surfed, and rode out hurricane Andrew at sea on a sail powered vessel (okay Andrew was not so much as planned but due to the fact the bastard decided to fuck all the models and do something else.)

None of those things are 'smart' but they were a challenge and fun as hell.

I think you're being unfair to the base jumpers and free climbers there: if you were that stupid you'd never do any of that stuff more than once, would you?
I thought you were supposed to weather a storm on a boat by taking it out into deeper water where it won't get driven onto something that'll break it?

Actually the idea is to get the hell away from the storm.

In the case of Andrew, as I said, he basically told everyone what to do with their predictions and caught us trying to on a course that should have been perpendicular to his predicted path.

But yes, better to ride one out at sea, but even better to avoid them altogether.

The last option is loads better, yep. Who could argue with that?

I am thinking some people have gone mad.

Some? Really, only some?

I am of the opinion that it is a miracle that 2/3rds of the human population survived growing to adulthood.

And it is not that they are mad, it is that they are terminally stupid, a fault of genetics due to the fact that natural selection which would have normally eliminated such individuals is no longer part of human development.

MakeM3Urs -> RE: Sheriff: Firearm lunacy meets science idiocy in stupid hurricane act (9/10/2017 1:26:00 PM)

Silly stuff!
Everyone knows you can't stop a hurricane with anything less than one of those Cobalt bombs that they built in the early 60s but never tested for fear of burning the atmosphere right off the planet. Now THAT would stop a big bad storm.

stupid people doing stupid things and liable to hurt others instead of themselves.
Some people are just dumb.

Which could be eliminated IF we would stop providing medical care for idiots who do stupid shit without thinking, since it is a fact that one close call will not deter them in the future.

This is the reason why I advocate removing warning signs on jogging paths in Cougar hunting ranges. Just put up a sign that indicates that large predators live in the area, and above all, quite killing the cougars for attacking joggers. It has been proven scientifically that cougars (like just about every cat) is wired to chase and kill things that run from them.

The same is true for surfers who use short boards in waters known to be the hunting area of great whites. Sharks determine if something is edible by 'mouthing' it, aka taking a big bite. If it does not like what it tastes it goes away to find something else more palatable.

So, if a short boarder gets bit, because he happens to look like a large fat seal to a large shark, let the stupid fool bleed to death.

If first responders arrive on the scene of an accident and they are told the last words the victim said was "hold my beer" (or the equivalent in whatever part of the world they are in) then they should be legally allowed to deny service, the same with ER personnel.

So, if some idiot wants to stand out in hurricane force winds shooting at a hurricane, by all means let them. Hopefully they have not yet had the chance to breed, or course if they have, the odds are in favor of both the mother and the child standing right next to said idiot.

And as a way to hopefully prevent people from being this stupid, make the weekly Darwin Awards updates part of the national news, hell make it a nightly bit on the local news.

Open it with some local media personality saying, "And in local news, the following idiots earned nominations for the Darwin Awards, the awards that honor those who died in spectacularly stupid ways that using common sense would have prevented."

There is a reason that shows today like America's funniest home videos, and true tv's Dumb <insert activity> video shows have the disclaimer "Do not attempt this at home" when those born before 1980 never needed such warnings.

I'm right with you. Seatbelt and motorcycle helmet laws are just stupid. The medical profession has gotten too good at hindering natural selection.

Repealing seatbelt and helmet laws would certainly help with the backlog of people waiting on organ transplants.
