Every state sets its own requirements for eligibility to register to vote.

The two year residency requirement of my youth was ruled unconstitutional in the 1970s.

When the Constitution was new; you had to own property in many states to be allowed to register to vote. (changed by 14th amendment and a court challenge to state property requirements)

What are the requirements where you live?

What do you consider reasonable requirements?

In CA, you fill out a form and give them an ID number. But, they never ask for visual of that ID, when you register or when you vote.

So anyone can vote even non citizens or felons.
But fortunately there is no voter fraud.

I don't remember what it took to register in CT, it was a long time ago. I was 18. But, I can honestly say that it was harder to transfer my drivers license to CA than registering to vote here.

When I registered in 93 I had to take the written test to get the DL transferred.
Then the Dl proved residence. I had to , as I remember had to provide another ID ,
Picture Id was later.

Currently, to register in Mississippi, you have to provide proof of address so they can determine which voting precinct you live in and prove you are who you say you are to register to vote.

Since it was at the DMV and I was getting a Driver's License for the state, the photo ID was moot. The DMV knows where you live. <grin> I was surrendering my Washington DL and getting one for MS. The proof address I used was a utility bill in my name showing the mailing address at the house.

Both made you provide evidence you were who you say you are.

Here in Michigan you can register at the Secretary Of State (MI equivalent of DMV in most states) at any time. If you are getting a MI DL and have just moved from another state you need to bring proof of your new address such as a utility bill in your name. You can also register at the County Clerk's office, or at any Post Office. Photo ID of some form is required. If you don't have a DL you can obtain a state ID through the Secretary of State office for a low fee. (Think it was only $5 last I heard.)
