pahunkboy -> staying out of heated threads (7/28/2006 5:39:38 PM)

i wonderred how many stay out of obvious minefield threads.
these have been on the off topic- isreal, abortion, the type that simply stir things up- with very little comment ground in them- or win-win outcomes.

is this "im staying out of it" attititude...is it wisdom that comes with age or experience- is it im too busy.
i guess a few years ago it might have been ":fun" to engage in this type of trainwreck.

talk to me.

are non-reponders more internet savy?

what is your opinion?

I just choose my battels these days :)

cuddleheart50 -> RE: staying out of heated threads (7/28/2006 5:56:12 PM)

I stay out of all of them, I have my opinions about things, and I will not a argue about any other them... or discuss them.  Stubborn, I know.  [:D]

windchymes -> RE: staying out of heated threads (7/28/2006 6:00:16 PM)

I love a good debate, when the participants keep it grounded and healthy and stay open-minded.  But when hysteria mounts and people start pulling shit out of their asses to make points that weren't even brought up, or won't hear any other side of an argument but their own, then I find better things to do.

Hence my Tag line #2

missturbation -> RE: staying out of heated threads (7/28/2006 6:01:41 PM)

I post in threads that i feel i have a point to make in. I wont stay away because the thread could become volatile. Ive been in quite a few that got heated and ill make my point in them. Where i draw the line is when it starts to be personal attacks and then i just think pathetic and walk away.

pahunkboy -> RE: staying out of heated threads (7/28/2006 7:13:09 PM)

interesting comments from all.  well thought out- i can appreciate each-

Sometimes...I just can't help but open my mouth....

To answer your question, I think it comes from age and experience.

litleone8620 -> RE: staying out of heated threads (7/28/2006 8:03:17 PM)

I think there's a difference between a thread that is for discussion and a thread that's for flaming. I try to avoid the latter.

I don't stay away from threads you mention.  If i have an opinion, i'll post it. If someone wants to take offense, it's their problem. I like a good discussion as much as the next person, but once it turns into a flame war, and gets off subject, i stay away.

I suppose it could be from age=experience, but i'm only 20 and don't have that much experience. I just know when to stay away, and when to give my .02.

proudsub -> RE: staying out of heated threads (7/28/2006 8:45:33 PM)

I avoid most of them, don't have enough time on CM for that.

MistressLorelei -> RE: staying out of heated threads (7/28/2006 9:04:11 PM)

I would much rather read a thoughtful, intelligent, even passionate debate, than a bunch of chat room-style silliness over and over and over again simply for the sake of silliness.  But the good thing is, like those who don't like to read the more controversial threads....  I can skip by even the hijacks in them if I choose.  It's not the end of the world either way.

I can learn something from others who may not share my opinions, but yet have an opinion to offer.

BitaTruble -> RE: staying out of heated threads (7/28/2006 11:45:04 PM)

I come here for BDSM discussion and entertainment and tend not to check the off topic threads as often as I do ask a submissive and general discussion. I belong to a political debate forum and get more than enough there to satisfy my craving for heat. ;) It's just not what I come to CM to do.

I pick what I feel the most passionate about.  I am not afraid of debate, or backing up what I say.  I start getting out of it, when it becomes a lot of childish name calling and things of that nature.

If people want to have a real discussion, I am all for it.. if they want to name call... there is a grade school right down the road where I am sure they would fit right in.

My $2 worth[:D][:D]

It depends on several things. My current available time to devote to it. My personal frame of mind and energy. The subject. The current state of the thread.

If the thread has not already been beat like 100 dead horses and developed into a chest thumping contest with hundreds of links to prove each person is right and yada yada yada I may do one of two things.......depending on my moooood. Either buzz in, add my opinion and watch it off and on. ORRRRRRR, if I see it headed down the highway to every chest thumper looking like a fool I MAY (innocent look on face) devise a slightly zingy little remark to poke sharp sticks into overinflated egos to let them know how rediculous their foolishness is and give another point of view. I have only seen ONE thread where people strongly disagreed yet managed to behave like intelligent adults all thru the disagreement. My respect for those two men went up thru THE ROOF when I read that thread I was so very impressed and said so. We are all humans and all make mistakes and none of us are ever going to agree 100% but there is no reason to sink to the level of middleschool aged girls to get our points across. I also believe there is alot of good in diversity, it brings balance. I think we should all be able to discuss our diverse opinions and learn from one another without treating thoses that do not agree with us like morons. Oh, the two gentlemen, IF my dingy brain serves me correctly, were CrappyD(the guy with the wild purple shirt)  and........I am so probably going to mutilate this spelling.......Padriac (funky cool  red, orange and yellow art thingy picture).

EnglishDomNW -> RE: staying out of heated threads (7/29/2006 5:30:35 AM)

I'm afraid I just wade right in there, all guns blazing and almost always regret it later.  I think the OP's right about the wisdom of staying out of it - if someone's got a strong opinion about something, they're not going to change it because someone disagrees with them on an Internet message board.

Littlepita -> RE: staying out of heated threads (7/29/2006 10:01:32 AM)

I read them quite a bit. I don't post in them too often because I'm ususally on the wrong side of the debate around here and I don't like to be yelled at.  [:D]

VandalHeart -> RE: staying out of heated threads (7/29/2006 10:10:05 AM)

Boredom is a powerful motivator, my friend.  The fact that you can find a reason - ANY reason - not to engage in those threads is admirable.  I, on the other hand, am not so self-controlled, but I am working on it.

MasterRenegade77 -> RE: staying out of heated threads (7/29/2006 10:12:10 AM)

I have My opinions & others have their own, I welcome healthy conversation, but when someone starts to flame Me or others I put them on ignore, thinks A/all should enter these threads w/an open mind & a willingness to discuss things in an intelligent manner not just Blow Smoke & Inject B.S.!!!
With that said yes I generally am very selective of the threads I post on some just aren't worth the effort...
