Failing to refer to transgenders as “ze” or “hir” a violation of human rights

Businesses in New York City face fines under a new law that makes it a violation of someone’s human rights not to use their preferred “gender pronoun”.

According to the New York City Commission on Human Rights, employees, landlords and businesses who refuse to refer to transgender people as terms such as “ze” and “hir” will be in violation of the New York City Human Rights Law.

Violations include, “Intentional or repeated refusal to use an individual’s preferred name, pronoun or title. For example, repeatedly calling a transgender woman “him” or “Mr.” after she has made clear which pronouns and title she uses.”

“Covered entities may avoid violations of the NYCHRL by creating a policy of asking everyone what their preferred gender pronoun is so that no individual is singled out for such questions and by updating their systems to allow all individuals to self-identify their names and genders. They should not limit the options for identification to male and female only,” states the “legal enforcement guidance” on gender identity.

The notion of a business asking every customer who walks through the door if they want to be identified as “he,” “she,” “ze,” “hir,” or any other of the 71 Facebook “gender options” is of course completely absurd.

“So people can basically force us — on pain of massive legal liability — to say what they want us to say, whether or not we want to endorse the political message associated with that term, and whether or not we think it’s a lie,” writes UCLA Law Prof. Eugene Volokh.

Volokh also makes the point that some people identify as “gender fluid” and so their preferred pronoun could change on a daily basis. Some people also identify as “otherkin”. Are businesses also going to be fined for failing to refer to customers as certain species of animal?

"In California, It's Now a Crime to Use Wrong Gender Pronoun For LGBT Seniors"

quote:

In California, it’s now a crime to refuse to use the gender pronoun nursing home residents prefer.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed the “LGBT Senior Bill of Rights” Thursday, which only applies to nursing homes and long-term care facilities. According to the law, people who “willfully and repeatedly” do not “use a transgender resident’s preferred name or pronouns” could, if found guilty of the misdemeanor, spend up to a year in county jail and face a $1000 fine. The law also requires the aforementioned facilities to allow residents to use the bathroom of their choice.

State Sen. Scott Weiner, who authored the legislation, argued people’s religious beliefs must be put aside in public places.

“Everyone is entitled to their religious view,” Wiener said. “But when you enter the public space, when you are running an institution, you are in a workplace, you are in a civil setting, and you have to follow the law.”

He also thanked Brown in a statement after he signed the bill into law.

“Our LGBT seniors built the modern LGBT community and led the fight for so many of the rights our community takes for granted today. It is our duty to make sure they can age with the dignity and respect they deserve,” he said. “I want to thank Governor Brown for joining our coalition in supporting this bill, which will make a real difference in people’s lives. The LGBT Senior Bill of Rights is an important step in our fight to ensure all people are treated equally regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Having worked in a fair number of nursing homes and ltc facilities, Im surprised it had to be made a law

the topic is NOT NY.

the topic is transgender pronouns and the law. that that OP took place in ny is inconsequential.

and since you criticized its date, I gave you something current.

When the hell were pronouns voted on by actual transgenders? Xi? Hir? That seems more like someone that's nonbinary or gender fluid.
Any MtF transgenders I've known have wanted traditionally feminine pronouns (she, her), while FtM have wanted masculine pronouns used (him, his). I understand these, I've known quite a few of both.

I don't understand newer classifications, like nonbinary and gender fluid, as I mentioned earlier. I've had no real experience with anyone that's ever told me that they identified as either.

Yep. This is nothing more than expecting people to refer to others as "he" or "she", not too difficult. Simple courtesy.

It's atypical of any nurse I know to mistreat patients that way. I, too, am surprised it had to be made law.

yeh the 29th amendment all people will be courteous at all times, especially when da gubmnt sends you to kill rag heads! There goes the remnants of speech down the tubes

Who else but RO could turn a simple insistence on politeness and courtesy into a "gubmint" conspiracy?

Why do so many people insist upon their 'right' to gratuitously insult people who are different? Especially when many of these very same people declare that they belong to a religion that posits "love thy neighbour as thyself" as one of its most important religious obligations?

Because when you go next door and start masturbating them, they call the fucking police. I mean, I'm just trying to live up to Matthew 19:19 and love them like I love myself, and they get all freaked out. Fucking anti-Christians.....

non-Christians are really good at thinking that unless Christians display an open permissiveness for every behavior under the sun, they are somehow not acting as Christians.

I don't know about you but "up to a year in county jail and face a $1000 fine" doesn't sound like "simple insistence" to me.

Why, because we live in the US and supposedly have not only the right but the freedom to do pretty much anything we want.

So if someone wants to act like a fool or an asshole, I insist on their right to act like a fool or an asshole but I also insist on my right to call them a fool or an asshole if I feel like it even if they say they don't want to be called a fool or an asshole. I insist because if you diminish even just one person's rights and freedoms you diminish everybody's rights and freedoms even those of the fools and assholes.

That is because unlike Christians, most non-Christians actually know what words are attributed to Jesus. You know, things like Luke 6:31, Matthew 7:1-3, Matthew 7:12, and John 8:7, off the top of my head.

Don't blame us because you guys don't follow the tenets of the religion you claim, it's not our fault you are hypocrites.

It's pretty much a given that they don't give a fuck about Christ and the only bits of the Bible they show any interest in are in the old testament.
Somebody who knows a few bits of Leviticus and Genesis better than all of the Gospels has no business calling themself a Christian in the first place, frankly. If they want to stick to a dumbed down version of the talmud they should get a mitvah, swear off pork and start calling themselves jews instead.
