Why would you punish his family for what he did?

The only target that makes sense here are the people who enabled the shooter, not people who were unfortunate enough to be related to him.
when he did what he did the estate was his. It's not punishing his family it's using his earnings not theirs.

In my opinion, correct.

The "family" wouldn't have the money without the death of Paddock, himself. A suit against the estate means there is a limit to compensation for the plaintiff. The damages awarded won't exceed his net worth. The brothers won't lose any of their own assets. Just what would have come to them from Steven Paddock's will.

Not a big deal but I am thinking that this case could eventually run into the millions. That could bankrupt the estate.

I'm OK with that. Nobody else is responsible for paying the debts of the estate.

The real problem is that it needs to be a class action lawsuit, so that the victims and families of those murdered all get something.

bounty44 -> RE: Vegas lawsuits...there a'com'n. (10/14/2017 4:34:18 AM)

I have a strong sense of that any criminal should have to compensate victims or victim's families in some meaningful capacity and that it shouldn't have to be the result of a lawsuit, but rather written right into the penal codes.

A throwback to debtors prisons?

heavyblinker -> RE: Vegas lawsuits...there a'com'n. (10/14/2017 5:13:27 AM)

Maybe the relatives of the shooting victims should each be allowed to kill one member of the shooter's family/extended family.

It'd be cute to extend the notion to cover criminal negligence as well as crimes of violence: they'd soon sort out this problem with contaminated water in Flint if the polluters were having to pay wergild every time somebody wound up in hospital...

We're not all the sort of partisan halfwit who think that makes any kind of difference. Try to keep up.

All Democrat politicians, in the Flint case.

Not so much....

Five people, including the head of Michigan's health department, were charged Wednesday with involuntary manslaughter in an investigation of Flint's lead-contaminated water, all blamed in the death of an 85-year-old man who had Legionnaires' disease.

Nick Lyon is the highest-ranking member of Republican Gov. Rick Snyder's administration to be snagged in a criminal investigation of how the city's water system became poisoned after officials tapped the Flint River in 2014.

Lyon, 48, the director of the Health and Human Services Department, is accused of failing to alert the majority-black population about an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the Flint area, which has been linked by some experts to poor water quality in 2014-15.

An involuntary manslaughter conviction carries up to 15 years in prison

Personally, if it were me, I'd probably do that with the money, anyway. Paddock wasn't worth nearly what all of this is going to cost, but it would be something.

I was sitting here this morning thinking about the idea of suing the hotel. It's going to sound air-headed, so be patient with me.

Exactly what did people expect the hotel to do? I've heard stuff about how the staff was supposed to notice a guy with suitcases and what have you, as if people with luggage would be an unusual occurrence.

There's also been the suggestion that the hotel should have had metal detectors to prevent firearms from getting in. It makes me wonder just exactly how other people pack. Even if I were going to skip the whole idea about what in my kink bag has metal, (and trust me, if I were going to Vegas, at least some of the toy collection would come with me) I thought about all of my regular stuff would set a metal detector off. Curling irons, electric razors, metal hair barrettes, and who knows how many other things. This huge hotel is supposed to search every person's bag that would be setting off a metal detector? Are we going to x-ray everything like we do at airports, 'cause we all know how much people enjoy that. [8D]

Yeah, I'm not sure the hotel could be found at fault either, but it's likely the best hope of financial restitution for all the victims, and the one most likely to settle the cases, instead of going to court.
