Conservative website first paid Fusion GPS for Trump research

A conservative publication said Friday it paid a Washington research firm to start probing Donald Trump’s background — a move that set in motion a chain of events leading to the explosive dossier alleging ties between Trump associates and Russia.

In a statement, the Washington Free Beacon said it retained Fusion GPS to provide research on multiple Republican candidates in the 2016 presidential election. Two people familiar with billionaire GOP donor Paul Singer said he provides financial support to the publication. A spokesman for Singer’s firm, Elliott Management, did not respond to requests seeking comment.

The Free Beacon said its research ended before Fusion GPS hired a former British intelligence officer, Christopher Steele, to produce a series of reports alleging links between Russia and those close to Trump. That occurred after the firm was retained by a lawyer for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

“None of the work product that the Free Beacon received appears in the Steele dossier,’’ said the statement from Free Beacon editor in chief Matthew Continetti and chairman Michael Goldfarb. “We stand by our reporting and we do not apologize for our methods.’’

This shouldn't be news to anyone who has been paying attention.
When the dossier was first released, it was all over the news that Steele had originally been paid by Trump's GOP primary opponents, and then the Dems picked him up during the election.

Of course, if you ask your typical RWNJ, they will ignore this and say that Hillary paid him to make up a bunch of lies, presumably so they would inevitably be exposed as such, thereby humiliating the DNC forever.

It doesn't make any sense that they would want to find actual facts that could seriously damage Trump, because obviously such facts could never exist, him being Jesus and all.

Operation research on Trump when he was a candidate in the GOP Primaries.

I think there may be a distinction to be made, here.

The way I hear it (and maybe my sources are wrong), the involvement of Steele (A Brit who headed the Russia Division of MI-6) and Russian sources wasn't an issue until after the Free Beacon abandoned the project.

While that isn't going to help the endless partisan pissing and moaning, here, my sources tell me that Steele's involvement and that of Russian sources make this a criminal act.

Add to that there's evidence that this now debunked "dossier" was the basis for a few of the FISA warrants used to spy on President-Elect Trump's associates, this could land more than a few people in some legal hot water.

If the names "Clinton" or "Obama" wind up on that list, I'm all for it.

The Republicans paid the firm for legitimate opposition research. Hillary and Obama's FBI paid the firm for the illegal Russian stuff.

Think of it as a fireworks stand. The Republicans bought sparklers and smoke bombs while team Hillary bought grenades, SAMs, claymores and dirty nuclear bombs

Not like those Conservative “research” types to attack their own lot or dangle some filth over the “candidates.” I always wonder who is behind them – oi swearyman you about?

I noted Trump did a few this year. It wasn’t actually him it was those Mysterious Conservative Right Wing Nut jobs who lurk behind the scenes.

I liked this one Boscox what about you?

I look at it this way...No matter how the information came out about the DNC and Clinton that influenced the election what counted is was it true. It seems that it was and that could and should not of been ignored. The crime was, and as is investigated, was the source... Was it Russia in collusion with Trump and his team?

The same with the information on Trump... if the information is true then it should not be ignored. If there was something illegal about how it was obtained then it should be treated as a crime. Political embarrassment should not be a reason to attempt to hide the source... or used to deflect from the the Russian investigation the real crime in all of this.

Look kinkroids, opposition research is done by all opposition, so what ? Get over it. Nothing new here except the Russian connection and that needs to be played out, that's all.

The bit I find hilarious is the spectacle of people who spent the last eight year insisting that only opposition research should be taken seriously and accorded any value insisting the opposite the second the letter behind the president's name changed.
Are they genuinely so blinded by their ideological blinkers that they can't see how partisan this makes them look?

I have a low opinion on what goes on in the UK. Especially from the Tory Establishment. They are the biggest culprits to democracy over here. And yet the good part of me believes people have fee will. It is not for me to impose my will on humanity, let alone via the recourse of lies and fake news.

In some ways I have a lower opinion of (some) the RWNJ establishment than I do of Trump.

But I believe Trump has committed every crime in the book and he is truly a warped dangerous individual and a monstrosity to humanity.

They already have, and have always had, enough to remove him via impeachment or Amendment 25.

And yet here we are.

As in, it was supposed to mean treason when Trump was being propagandized as some kind of foreign agent criminal mastermind with Russian ties but now that everything points to Hillary and Obama's DoJ it means nothing at all

Bosco's most trusted news source is apparently his imagination.

The allegations don't mean nothing at all, but the biggest takeaway here is that Trump and co. are currently terrified over what is about to happen.

And I can't let go of the professional diagnosis that seems so spot on, they are constantly and irrespective of all other input...'doubling down on what they want to believe.'

Imagine the intellectual calisthenics required for that.

You don't have to: the former Sanity demonstrates the moral and intellectual toll that takes on you every time he posts.
I hope for his sake that they impeach (or shoot) the cheeto faced feret headed tiny fingered shitgibbon soon, or he'll do himself an injury making excuses and insisting that airstrip one has always been at war with eurasia.

First, Trump wasn't claimed to be the mastermind of anything as his opposition knows, he's only masterminded making million$ off lenders and of course, the resulting great bankruptcies. And nothing points to Hillary or Obama other than a few fisa warrants.

And YES, any president of the US who in any way is or has been operating to assist in any way, any party let alone foreign state subject to a US federal investigation, and to also blatantly disregard the will of a large, solid majority of congress in his failure to sign or even endorse the sanctions bill (effective date: 10/01) on his desk needs to be scrupulously judged.

Yes, if the left were or are traitors simply for being left and espousing their opinions even in opposition, then Trump and his clan are most certainly traitors.
