Iranian leader bans usage of foreign words

1 hour, 48 minutes ago
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has ordered government and cultural bodies to use modified Persian words to replace foreign words that have crept into the language, such as "pizzas" which will now be known as "elastic loaves," state media reported Saturday.

If this isn't reason enough to nuke them, I don't know what is.

...i'm not sure this is really any different to the french trying to keep their language free of anglo words, or indeed america when it decided that honour should be spelled as honor.......language is tied to national identity in many ways, i ought to know i live in Wales.......lol........surely this is just normal.....

Exactly, but it may be passable if they ban the singer Meatloaf

Hopefully CM won't eat my second attempt to post here hehheh.

Philosophy, I guess the difference to me is that I like America and France, and actually quite a few Iranians, but dislike their Head Goober. Spell honor with the "u" here, and likely the only one to say anything would be an english teacher, but I wonder if that'd be the only response over in Ayatollah land.

Agreed, Dauric. I've yet to actually find an establishment that renamed them "freedom fries", but if I did, I would not call them that, and likely wouldn't buy the damn things.

Crikey - there's a pizza shop run by Iranian emigres in Cheltenham (England) - I wonder if this nutter will send his secret police over to make them change their shop name and menu!

I doubt it mind, as if anything he'd just have them killed if he had the power to do so. After all, anyone that doesnt kowtow to your divinely inspired words and deeds is not only your enemy by default but also the enemy of your God and therefore evil - so its your religious duty to destroy them.

It does make me wonder though, if this God is so all powerful and omnipresent and is indeed as pissed as you say at such "evildoers" then why does he need a human to do his work? Or maybe, God is indeed merciful and so doesnt use his vast powers to destroy the evil ones - which would imply he doesnt want you to either?

You could argue that your God wants you to do these things to prove your loyalty and worship of course; but how does harming someone (a sin against your God) prove to him anything more than that you disrespect him and his commandments?

Or maybe,. your God isnt what you say he is, and you are simply perpetrating hate for your own human motives and attributing it to your God as his will. Crikey, is God going to be pissed at you.....

OK, so you limit yourself to doing things in his name only within your own country and culture through religious police and curbs on your people - however even this is a problem of course, because now you are saying that God is somehow confined within your borders and his will (as expressed and executed through you) is limited somehow - sounds like a blasphemy to me? So, you'd best try to express and execute your God's will anywhere and everywhere you can - but now you've run into the same problem we started with....

Changing words in your language cannot be done by a presidential decree alone - it would require a huge army of police and informants to enforce - and since your purpose is to enact the will of God on Earth, is this really what God needs you, your capabilities and your people to be doing? Surely a waste of your divine inspiration to do anything other than bring about his will, and a heretical diversion from his purpose for you to minor in changing words that have nothing to do with his truth?

Sounds like another "pizza" drivel coming out of the fanatical bigots in Iran to me!

Fast reply......
Actually I agree with Philosophy on this one. Its just another example of a country trying to maintain its distinct language in the face of the overwhelming tide of angicization that is engulfing the world. It is a common and somewhat understandable impulse, one that is found in many couties....France, iran, japan, Russia, Wales, Canada, and yes even the US, though there folks seem to have the strange idea that English is somehow threatened by spanish....the US must be the only place on earth where the english language is "threatened".

BTW, just how does one threaten a language....do it or I will spank your verbs?

Quiet as it's kept there are alot of Iranians that don't like their head goober either...
One of the news shows had a crew go in & talk to some of the Iranian
people before we invaded Iraq... Some were saying when we got done with Iraq that we should just keep coming & free them too... I have to admit that it was mostly the young & those  that had been introduced to western culture, I also have to say that they'd not say it    on camera... I wonder Why??? LOL
