Grace, what would you suggest?
You can't EVER let Al Qeada terrorists go!
What do you think they'd do if they got out?

i didn't say let them go :) i just said perhaps detain them in not-so-secret prisons. if the government has to hide what it is doing then it is probably violating human rights laws, and i am against that. if the government is detaining them and doing everything above board, they wouldn't have to keep it secret. just having everything be as transparent as possible doesn't necessarily mean we're going to let them out and send them on their merry way :) (hell, do you realize what those terrorists would go through were they to be put in a regular prison and people realize who they are? they'd wish their mother never laid eyes on their father.)

the idea of secret prisons, government-sanctioned secret prisons (i'm all about the dungeon! :P), makes me sick. even if it ends up only being a symbolic order because i doubt anyone listens to the un anymore (as often as it has failed, i think we should at least TRY to make it work) at least someone in the international community is standing up and saying "this needs to stop."

It makes me sick also. Hypocrisy knows no bounds. One of the very first things the Marine Corps taught ya... if you take the enemy prisoner, you always set the example by treating them better than they'd treat you. Not following that example always comes back to haunt you.

Wow.  This means we'll actually have to ADMIT we have "secret prisons".

This should be good.  I can see it now.."We do not have secret prisons!  What we have are a mandatory enforcemnt of occupancy in spartan resorts for misplaced tourists. (Yeah.. that's it.. that's the ticket!)".

I think if anything about this is true, we have a unique example of political unfunded mandates which have NO concept of the unintended consequences of the proposed action.
First we will need to begin a major draft and universal military training program in this country to get the forces to begin to follow through on the action.
Likely we'll need to nationalize all the oil fields in most non-allied areas of the world to pay for the program.
Then we need to set priorities for the project: do we first attack and capture the prisons (and release which prisoners?) in Siberia, in China, in Israel, in Libya, in Mexico, in Saudi Arabia, in India, in Pakistan, in Syria, in France, in Somalia, in Tanzania, in Peru, in Nicaragua, in Vietnam, in Peru, in Zimbabwe, in Germany, in Lebanon. in Argentina, in South Africa, or in Alabama?

There are a lot of places like this in the world and a lot of them do NOT have any pretense of ethical treatment or of any Geneva Convention rights (which the USA did NOT sign).

Sounds like a long term job for the military!

Likely each UN country signing any such document should be told that by doing so they go on the "A" list for 1st investigation.

As a U.S. Taxpayer I just don't want my Taxdollars going to the "U.N."
They are totally corrupt and inept.
It may have been a good idea in 1948 but it's not anymore.

If we do have secret prisons and the UN wants them closed, lets throw up fencing around the U.N. and transfer them all there and keep the un closed so no one can come in or go out.  Eliminates a lot of cost to the U.S. taxpayers.  Andwhile we are at it, has the UN reimbursed us for our troops in Korea or everywhere else we have been asked to send them.  The answer is no because countries that did not want them sent there do not pay for them.  I think it was computed once that we could go without paying dues to the UN for at least 50 years just for what is owed us for troops, food, medical supplies, etc that we provided and were never reimbursed for them.
I say let them move wherever they want and do whatever they want, just do not count on the U.S. being involved in any way shape or form.

We should probably comply, and invite inspectors to help out.

Our next administrations should do it's best to heal relations with the UN, and should them work from within to sort out some of the issues that caused distance in the first place. No party is clean in this. Most of the leaders that "accuse" the United States of this, or that ... are leaders of nations that were profiteering by selling advanced technology to countries that supported terrorism.

I strongly agree with caitlyn here. The UN is a great idea, with serious flaws, but America should work hard to get things right there.

And if we have prisoners, with actual evidence they've done something, fine, but if we're just holding people because, well, maybe they might know something, ship them out.

That's like saying Communism is a great idea with serious flaws. Both the UN and Communism do not work. That is a pretty serious flaw.

Naw, waste of time.

They'll just resort to waterboading in abandoned warehouses, if they have to shut the more formal places down.

Communism did not work, in countries where no system has ever worked.
