Since the death penalty has come up ... In this case, I'm a bit torn. Clearly, Manson was smart enough to persuade/manipulate people into doing some heinous things without getting his hands dirty. It's also pretty clear that unless he was one of the best actors on the planet, he was nutty as a fruit cake. His crimes would seem to call for the death penalty, but if we believe he is mentally ill, how do we cross that particular line? I do believe that nearly a half a century behind bars with no hope for release is pretty cruel punishment (I've mad that general argument here, before), but society also has a duty to defend itself from beings of his ilk.
