Recently a poster on this board made the claim that white cops who shoot African American men get away with it.

Maybe all to often they do, which is as much the responsibility of the juries as it is the society that allows that to happen.

However, this pleasing headline came across my news feed this morning, and it reminds me that in the US, sometimes justice is served.

Former South Carolina police officer who shot Walter Scott sentenced to 20 years

Personally, I do not think 20 years is nearly long enough, but at least he got something.

Yeah, in this particular case, there was no "accident". The defendant was a murderer who, somehow managed to get a badge to stick on his chest.

He chased Mr. Scott down and murdered him, plain and simple.

Hangin's too good for the scumbag.

Is a plea deal on a lesser charge something we should celebrate?

I mean, at least there will be some justice, but it's not as fulfilling as a conviction by jury.

As far as anyone going beyond 'oh really' as in this case, I wouldn't hold my breath. The difference ?

This cop could in no way invoke the ambiguous, malleable and in some cases very doubtful 'I felt I was in danger' defense. Or he did and the jury didn't by it either the grand jury where so many buy this and there is no trial or the trial jury as it got that far and probably only for that reason.

The police generally speaking, not you or me but the police can always say 'I felt I was in danger' and shoot to kill. The bigger question is why so many grand juries by it.

Hung jury in his first trial. This is from a plea deal.

I didn't read the deal because we know the basics here. A hung jury ? What, were they fucking blind ? That's a tell...for a racist jury.

Juries are weak on criminal convictions against police. Prosecutions are often insufficient as well, while defenses are provided by the union.

The actual District Attorneys only handle the case if it's a guaranteed winner, making him look good on the cameras, for his next election.

.....and appealing to voters who are just like him...not the defendants.
